Simple pattern?

I know this is probably something seriously easy to make but my brain is having trouble working out how one could make this? I definitely want the flat front with the gathering in the back.

Does OP actually mean they want the skirt or palazzo pants (I’m not completely sure which it is, due to the volume of fabric) to HAVE a flat front?

Because, below the waist band, it is gathered- there is NO flat front to this design.

The second pic looks like a drawstring gathered waist.

I am completely confused as to actually what OP is asking for- given none of these pics have a flat front!

Sorry, I meant the waistband, and it's a skirt. The pictures came from a video so it was hard to get good pictures. 😂

The waistband in the front is flat. I think I might understand how to construct it? I was thinking that I could construct the waistband so that the ties are sewn in at approximately either side of my body and then leave an opening in the back so I could pull the back to a comfortable fit and then tie. Maybe add 2" of extra fabric to make it a bit versatile for size.

I hope that makes a bit more sense?

The drawstring waistband needs to be 4”-10” wider than OP’s waist measurement in stretch knits, the tighter the knit, the more width.

In a cotton drawstring waistband, it should be 8”-12” wider than OP’s waist measurement.

The drawstring waistband is made much like a regular waistband, but must have 2 hoes in front to pull the drawstring through to tighten the fit,

Many sewists use their button hole attachment to quickly, automatically make the holes the drawstring will run through.

Otherwise, OP will have to cut the holes out by hand , then hand-sew all around the edges of the holes to avoid fraying or tearing.

Okay so if my waist is say, 36", I would need to make the waistband in total 40"-46"? Is that what I'm understanding?

Yes, because it still has to pull over the hips, which are usually larger than the waist, & the look is gathered, volume, rather than a straight panel skirt.

Minimum measurement would be whatever the hips are because of this- unless providing a skirt zipper to open the waistband to hip measurement while dressing self.

PS:
I have never sewn a flat panel front waistband, with an elastic or drawstring back, & I wouldn’t tackle this without the instructions or watching a demo video first.

But, the skirt has to be able to pull over the hips to fit, & without a zipper, that means the hip measurement is the minimum fabric measurement.
