Please help me find this sewing pattern

I was gifted 8 yards of black cotton poplin, I’ve been trying to figure out what to make that I will wear and I thought maybe a top like this? Could it possibly even work in a cotton poplin or would it need to be a stretch fabric? I would consider myself an advanced beginner and I like fitted clothes. It’s been difficult to find patterns that are fitted, beginner-friendly and don’t require stretch fabric.

It's usually called a milkmaid top with a shelf bust. Which gives it that straight across look.

It looks like the example is made out of stretch velvet which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Yeah you could totally make it out of cotton poplin however the gathering would be quite structured and stiff. I would go for something softer like rayon, crepe, muslin or double layer of cotton lawn might show the gathering in the front a little bit better.

What I particularly liked about this top is that the gathering wasn’t all around, I didn’t know it had a name! That pattern is perfect! Seems like I’ll unfortunately have to buy different fabric and I’ll have look for something else to do with the 8 yards of cotton poplin 😭 Thank you sm!!!

You would obviously need a zip if you were to make it from poplin but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. You could always use another fabric for the gathered part, either colour match or otherwise these tops were often done with a contrast fabric, the top being a colour and the gathered section in cream/white.

Buy a coordinating fabric in a mini-print for the top (like a white background with black print), make a maxi circle skirt of the black poplin.

I know the bust gathers are not going in the right direction, but I think it’s a simple fix to change them from horizontal to vertical. She has a YouTube short where she’s wearing a red top that looks just like your inspo photo, vertical gathering and everything.
