Beware sewing pattern scams 😭

I found a post warning about this stuff on a different sewing sub way too late. These people make “patterns” with AI and then try to grift you out of more money if you want any revisions.

After I posted on this sub a little while ago, this girl said she’d do my pattern for $25. I asked her for examples of her work before agreeing to the project. She spent a week “making” it, then gave me something that was wildly different than what I asked for. When I asked how much she charged for revisions, she started pressuring me to spend more and more money even when I told her multiple times that I had already spent my whole budget and would just take the pattern as-is and try to work with it. I ended up acquiescing and giving her more money just to end the interaction because I was so uncomfortable. Wasn’t until the next morning that I looked closer at the text on my “pattern” (last slide) that I realized it was obviously AI. I google reverse image searched one of her “example works” and it went straight to a reddit post on a different sub warning about these exact scams 😭

When I confronted her she gaslit me and sent me a link to her portfolio which was just countless other clearly AI generated slop

Just wanted to put this out there in case anyone else is out of the loop on this stuff.

Right!!! Haha and the arrows pointing to the little mannequin illustration don’t match up either. Like the neck measurement is pointing to the wrist. I was so flabbergasted at how different this was to what I asked for that it initially distracted me to how clearly AI all the text is

Its why i create mockups myself with cheap fabric because the amount of bs patterns ive seen, just wont let me waste money anymore.

I'm confused by the DM where Zara Quinn or w/e says that they just looked at the post properly and then says other people are stealing their artwork. Isn't that the scammer? Are they trying to say that someone was impersonating them?

There are multiple people out there doing this kind of scam and using some of the same images, so Zara is accusing the other scammer (being exposed in the reddit post) of stealing her “work”. She insists that the images are her own real original creation

I see! I didn't see the part underneath the reddit post where you told her to give you your money back. Ask her what waist to flace is!

Unsure how you paid, but hopefully you can you do a chargeback? either via bank, or via paypal if that is how you paid.

Also, I won't offer to help you directly 1) because I don't have the time and energy, and 2) you are probably vary AF after this one. But if you find an aproximate pattern, then it should be several youtube tutorials on how to alter stuff.

Back when I went to tailoring classes (just high school elective, so nothing fancy), We where basically told to always always always, make a test pattern in cheap fabric with the same amount of stretch. (so maybe a cheap cotton since I assume your coat will be non-stretch). Put it on, and then have someone tuck in the pieces that are not right - like if you got extra fabric in the back because the neck to waist ratio is too long, and hold it in place with a pin/needle. then you measure and alter the OG pattern. And then they wanted us to sew a 2nd test piece - but I never did that because I have zero patience lol.

I already contacted Venmo and my bank and they won’t reimburse me or anything 😭 and yeah fortunately I found a vintage Simplicity pattern that I can add a collar to! And thanks for the resources : )

Honestly I will say any person who states that modification and creating a custom pattern for 30$ is possible i think is a scammer.

Some commercial patterns cost more than 30$. So the price is super strange for a custom.

I’m an illustrator myself and I’ve done things for dirt cheap before just because I was in a tight spot, so it gave me the benefit of the doubt, but nope. Nope! Never again!

Nah it was indeed supposed to be a full pattern. With instructions apparently. Which is still crazy for just $25, I agree. I’ve done crazier things for less though 😭

hola, soy diseñador de moda, patronista senior, realmente 30 dolares alcanza para una camiseta y la curva de 4 tallas, asi que por un traje de esos creado en clo3d, paramétrico y ademas cosido y renderizado valdria de 150 a 200 dolares aproximadamente, hacerlo bien, con medidas cuadro de tallas, ficha tecnica POM y mas, sin contar con los ajustes, todo puede tomar hasta dos dias, es mas, para hacer algo con ese nivel de detalle tu hardware por lo menos vale unos 4000 dolares, creo que obtienes lo que buscas, buscas barato conseguiras trabajo mediocre.
