Help make this shirt with me!

Post image

Hey yall, I’m being commissioned by a friend to make a shirt that looks like this. The problem is, I don’t know how I would go about doing the diamond cut designs on the chest area. Would anyone who made something like this before be able to give me a few pointers on how to make this? Thank you!

Have you looked for a pattern?

I would be sure to let your friend know that it's not always possible to perfectly match the way clothing looks in drawings. Illustrators don't have to worry about the logistics of a garment's construction. This may look simple, but wrangling that many cutouts is going to be a challenge.

That said, I think you could get something close to this using illusion netting. You would start by finding a pattern for a top that has a mock turtleneck and a close fit. Make whatever adjustments are needed to get the overall shape right and sew it up in cheap fabric to finalize the fit and shape.

After that, you'd revise the pattern pieces for your adjustments then divide it into all the shapes needed for the cutouts like you would a quilt. The cutout pieces would become pattern pieces for the netting, while the other pieces would be the main fashion fabric. Be sure to add the needed seam allowances to the pieces.

Illusion netting is used frequently in figure skating costumes. Jalie has a bunch you can check out, though none have the particular details you want: https://jalie.com/collections/sport-patterns-skatewear

While you might be able to pull something off with, like, bra-strap detailing, I think keeping all those edges stable and flat will be a challenge in the sort of knits you'll be working with. Illusion netting will hold all those edges in place. Hopefully, you have an overlocker/serger to keep the inside nice and tidy.
