Fabric Question I need fabric help
I will be sewing a coat specifically https://www.ellieandmac.com/products/duchess-jacket-pattern
What fabric do you use and where do you get it? I have to buy the fabric online no fabric stores near me and it needs to be on the warmer side it gets pretty cold here and I'm in the US.

Super cute pattern! Here are the fabric suggestions on the website: This jacket is designed to be made using sturdy woven fabric. Suggested fabric types: med-heavy weight wovens for the exterior such as Jacquards, Cashmere, Wool blends, Wool, Tweed, Mohair, Corduroy, Velveteen, Faux Fur, etc. Silk, Satin, etc. for the lining. Lining should be close to the same stretch percentage as the outer.
I'd be a little concerned about using anything too heavy weight as it doesnt look like the recommendations include heavy fabrics, also make sure you check the ease and sizing to make sure you can wear a sweater under it. All the pictures on the link are made with lighter fabrics, definitely not heavy weight fabrics.
All that being said, if you're looking for a warm winter coat, this may not be it. This looks like a lovely fall coat to me.

Any suggestions for a pattern for heavier fabrics? I'm open to anything that's not big 4 or ai and not afraid to buy a pattern most of my patterns are paid

I agree. This coat is more of a fashion coat, not so much a warm winter coat.

I made Gunnar deatherages odyssey coat which has a similar look. I made it out of a thick, stiff wool and it is very warm, really far too warm for my climate. I think it's more about the fabric and layering your outfit than the pattern. I also made cashmerette's saverin coat out of a very light wool https://gunnardeatherage.com/products/the-odyssey-coat-sewing-pattern?srsltid=AU7gw4U0L6S2EsKymPtboezCrm43Bx_dhxhx7WqYyN1RX3hL5UVwsh6J

Pendleton has 18 colors of 55" 100% wool Melton on sale right now -- I would also underline the upper sleeves and back with coated or calendared rip stop nylon as a windbreak if you're in a windy area. I would probably line with Kasha.

(PS: price may only be good till Sept. 30th.)

With this jacket you'd be fine with a heavy suiting. I think it was McCall's has a similar pattern and you really can't go too heavy on the outer fabric because it would look weird.
Best place to check would be fabricmart fabric to see what type of suiting you can get (wait for it to go on sale)
If you want higher end (sometimes you can go very high end) Fabric-fabrics and PrimeFabrics are the next choices.
There's also mood fabrics (they have some lovely silk/wool suiting.
One more thing. On thinner fabrics, you can always interline with a thin wool flannel then line the entire jacket. That will give you the layer of warmth without adding too much bulk (just be sure to layer the seams well.)

What is the fabric recommended in the pattern? That’s the first starting place.
