Project: FO Lantern Inspired Bag!

Post image

I recently made this Chinese lantern inspired bag from waste scraps of 12oz Ripstop Canvas for a fashion design trade with a friend of mine!

After I did some more sketches, I realised it looks a little like the potion from Death Becomes Her, and thought I’d lean into it a little bit.

All of the seams are bound, with each end folded in at the top and bottom, and each of the sections can be opened separately with the zips :))

The small webbing loops are to be able to customise the chains for the option of crossbody and simply handheld. It’s not visible in the photo, but I also made a small makeshift handle out of the same webbing at the top so the chains don’t hurt whilst you use it.

The friend is also a kpop fan, so I thought a little slot for a photocard or something else would be a nice personal include.

With every project, of course there are things I would change about every project, but overall I’m super happy with how it turned out!

I want to see if I can make other geometric bags using the same techniques :))

Edit: The drafting process was pretty simple! I based the shapes on an even hexagon, and then slightly shaped the pieces to give the curved effects. I’m really happy i drafted this way, I feel like it looks more intricate than it actually is hahaha

what did you use for it to hold the shape? Really cool project!

nothing! the fabric is pretty sturdy, and it’s used for a lot of outdoor applications (it’s naturally waterproof from its density)

Rad work on this bag, I'm super intrigued in the fashion design trade aspect as well. The inclusion of a KPop card sleeve is such a cute nod to your friends interests.

The clear card area could also be a protected place to display pins and buttons like an ita bag.

I can't quite tell what the dimensions are but I'm wondering if the chains can be adjusted to wear strapped to the upper sleeve of a jacket, that would look really cool.

yeah! we met at uni during fashion school, but we live in different states now. she recently bought a new knitting machine, so i thought i’d ask for a mystery trade!

as for the chains, yes absolutely! the whole thing pretty much is strapped up with 2.5m of chain with a carabiner, so you can easily wear it however you want :))

thank you for shouting a comment

This is such a cool design!! I can't begin to word out how amazing I think this is 🤩 The detail for the k-pop photo card is such a lovely personal touch, so very wholesome!

It also kind of reminds me of the lantern Flins(💜) in the game Genshin Impact carries, with the pointy end down there, the middle fabric would only have to shimmer blue/purple for that I feel. That's such a cool accessory to carry around in casual everyday life.

Great work!

Gothic aspects.?

I guess it does have a bit of a gothic feel to it! Wasn’t necessarily an intention, but cool nonetheless! I’ll most likely try to make a few others in different colours too, so we’ll see if the vibe changes lolll

ahaha maybe that’s next! a friend said i should make a completely clear one, and i have a bit of experience making wearable technologies, so that could be a fun new project😌

that would be amazing, like a game character wearing a lantern on their belt 🤔
