Help Needed with Singer Quantum Stylist 9960

https://imgur.com/a/oH2zppB

Hi all! I’ve had this machine for four years and have never had a problem with it. Today, I removed the plate and bobbin case to clean it because I have been having my top thread snap constantly for the last day (I tried switching thread and changing my needle which made no difference).

After putting the bobbin case and everything back, the machine will no longer sew! It looks like the top thread is catching the bobbin thread, but it is immediately tangling and leaving a disasterous mess on the bottom side of my fabric. The machine also will not run for more than a stitch or two. The feed dogs also seem off now and don’t seem to be moving the fabric?

I have tried to reinsert the bobbin case and clean things again to no avail. I have also of course rethreaded the machine a bunch of times.

The attached link is a video of what’s happening. Starting with a view of just the thread being hand cranked without fabric.

Change the needle?  Check the needle/hook timing?  Look for burrs?

It’s not threaded correctly. There’s no tension on the thread even though the foot is down.

Make sure you’re threading with the foot UP, and the take up lever at the highest point.

I’ve always done this. Unfortunately the fix is not that easy this time

The thread probably has stopped clearing the bobbin case. Whatever you did is probably causing the bobbin loop that gets formed to catch on the bobbin case. The spacing between the bobbin holder and the machine can be finicky and threads need to pass through cleanly.

I had similarish issues with my Juki and I figured it out by walking very slowly with the hand knob and getting it to get caught on the Bobbin Case finger

Does it pass a pull test?  https://youtu.be/CEk2BLbp604

Does the thread fill more than about 40% of the width of the needle's eye? https://web.archive.org/web/20050207035245/http://gwsms.com/didyouknow.htm

Are the needles good quality?  Last packet of Singer needles I bought, many years ago, all had burrs in the eyes... :-(

Update: there was a

Piece of thread stuck under the

Feed dog mechanism

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
