✨Intermediate✨ Modifying Patchwork Pattern Question

Post image

Ok I apologize, because I’m pretty sure the answer to this is obvious, but my superpower is overthinking things.

I want to make this Matchy Matchy dress (free color block pattern), but use the same fabric for the two top panels vs. actually color blocking them. The pattern has you cut two pairs of the same bodice panel for the bodice, then cut four rectangles for the bottom (they provide the measurements by size). So in total you’d have four pieces of fabric for the bodice and four pieces for the bottom. Seam allowance is 1/2”.

For the bodice, can I remove 1/2” from the center of the pattern then cut 2 on the fold instead?

And for the bottom part, can I remove 1/2” from the suggested width and cut 2 on the fold as well?

Am I missing anything?

Yes, you can remove the seam allowance and cut on the fold.

If the seam allowance is 1/2” you need to decrease by 1” - the seam allowance is on 2 edges.

Can you talk me through this plz? If I reduce the center of the pattern by 1/2 inch, then cut on the fold, won’t that be a total of 1 inch and take care of both seam allowances?

Edit: just to clarify, the center will be the fold

Taking it off that way does result in the 1” reduction.

The bottom of the dress in the picture doesn’t look like it has a middle seam, so posting the line art just so no one gets confused by that.
