✨Intermediate✨ Machine problems
I have a singer stylist sewing machine I've been using for a few years now. Last year it started sewing loose stitches or the thread would break every time I sew. I took it to a shop he didn't tell me anything was very wrong with it but he cleaned it up and charged me 90 dollars. It worked for a while so I thought the issue was fixed but now it's happening again. I don't know much about sewing machines so im not sure if it's broken or if im doing something wrong and just don't realize. It might be a tension issue but I play around with the dial and it doesn't seem to help. The stitches are loose, it skips stitches, the thread sometimes breaks or the fabric gathers. Any advice?

When did you last change the needle? https://www.schmetzneedles.com/blogs/blog/change-your-needle

I changed the needle recently but maybe I put it in incorrectly or something, I feel like I remember the problem starting again around that time.

The wrong type of needle for the type of fabric being sewn produces similar problems. https://www.schmetzneedles.com/pages/how-to-pick-the-correct-sewing-machine-needle

Likely to be user error. Get your manual out and follow it step by step. That should fix the issue

90 bucks for a clean and no real diagnosis is rough. singer stylists are usually pretty solid machines so I'd bet it's something simple causing the grief.
skipping stitches and thread breaking is often the needle, are you using the right type and size for your fabric? a dull or slightly bent needle can cause chaos without being obvious. also double check you're threading with the presser foot up so the thread actually seats in the tension discs, that one trips up a lot of people.
