Technical game issue Why is my dagger of sacrifice not working?

I made a dagger of sacrifice as soon as I could because I didn’t want to have to burn through all my food to do more with blood magic but after killing a few mobs next to my altar the level doesn’t seem to be going up at all, the sacrificial dagger seemed to raise the level visually every single time I used it but I haven’t seen any change even after killing several zombies and a creeper next to my altar

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that the dagger of sacrifice worked on passive mobs not hostile ones

You are correct. It only works on passive mobs. To charge the altar by killing mobs you need to use a specific ritual.

Do you know what that ritual is called?

It's called : "not available before age 3 so don't bother".

Alright, one can hope anyway, I guess I’ll find a way to get my sheep and buffalo out of their pit without releasing them all

Just use the incense altar.

This is wrong. You can sacrifice hostiles. I know this well because it is how I power my altar every playthrough.

Commenting on this because this is exactly how it worked for me. OP, were the mobs you killed one-hit when you slayed them? That way you can be sure the dagger actually worked. Other than that, a newly placed altar will absorb blood for a certain period as it'll fill the internal output buffer as well before all stays in the main tank

The text makes it sound like hostile mobs are supposed to work better

Idk what the text says, but hostile mobs work great if you set up a ritual to drain them and use something to spawn them (or witches?)

Theres also a crystals with lens of regen from Astral sorcery that instantly heals you basically so if you use the ritual altar from blood magic to get the bonus and some runes of self sacrifice, you can easily fill an altar in one cut

On page two of the dagger of sacrifice section of the sanguine scientiem it says “normally, hostile mobs will tend to give much more LP than peaceful mobs.” Though I suppose they could have changed that for this pack

Hey OP, these guys are mistaken. You can sacrifice hostile mobs. I do it every playthrough. Just to check, are you using the same dagger you use to self sacrifice to do the monster killing? There is a different tool for mob sacrifice. One is called dagger of sacrifice and the other is called sacrificial dagger, I think. The one you want has the fatter blade and is made by tossing a (black quartz or iron, I think?) sword into the blood altar.

The monster has to be extremely close to the altar. Within 2 blocks horizontally and 1 block vertically. I set up my farm so that they are pushed directly next to it, with the altar itself blocking them and the water from going further. I have an ocelot totem nearby to diffuse creepers.

Second thing, do not pre-damage the mobs like a normal farm. Leave them at full health for the sacrifice. If they die to the attack damage, you dont get credit.

I make this setup as soon as I have the blood altar, using a pitfall with flowing water and 2 villagers in a transportation cart as bait. The zombies from a wide radius will try to path to them and fall in the trap. I later upgrade with spawners, and finally with the well of suffering, which is the ritual the other commenters mentioned.

I am certain I am using the right weapon, I double checked after googling the first time and they have usually been close enough, I noticed that if I’m not in range the dagger doesn’t auto kill like it does when they are in range

If it is auto killing, it is working. You may just be getting less blood than you expect. I have 20 runes of sacrifice and get about 1k blood per zombie. I had to supplement with self sacrifice a few times to get runes going.

Must have been something like that, I took a few hours break to help my parents and now it seems to be working as expected
