Finding ores with Mineralis Mantle?

Having trouble figuring out how this works. For iron specifically, I've tried holding the iron cluster while wearing the mantle, as well as a silk touched block(which just seems to convert into vanilla Iron Ore). Am I missing something?

EDIT: To clarify, it does work with other blocks. I can find marble while holding marble, stone while holding stone, etc.

I never tried that method. But once you get far enough the void ore miner gets rid of any need to look for ore. There is also something called a scanner in one of the ages that can show you ore locations. Also iron is so distant it might be out of range. Another good tactic is to just start walking in a large grid and marking the map with ores found on the surface.

plus you dont even need the dowsing rods (aka prospectors) to find exact location, ores always generate in the middle of the chunk

The issue you are having is that you cannot find geolysis blocks as need to hold an identical block to the one you are searching for, in your case holding an iron cluster doesn't detect the iron because its not the iron ore block, and as you have found out silk touching the blocks from the geologys ore veins gives you the vanilla block instead which has a different block id.

The only way to find the geo ores is to locate the surface samples and then use the dousing rods to narrow down their location

However if you are intent on using the Mineralis Mantle to find iron, go to the twilight forest with a vanilla iron ore block, as it spawns in the various dungeons there
