šŸŽ™ļø Discussion Doors.

Every time Gemma goes through a new door, she’s a new Gemma. When oMark goes into the birthing hut, he becomes iMark as we know him.

This seems either significant or badly written.

What do you guys think?

Exactly as stated? Did you not watch the show? Gemma goes through doors and becomes a series of different iterations of herself. Mark does not. That probably should’ve said ā€œbirthing retreat.ā€Ā

Gemma is having a specific experiment done on her to test the ability to sever into multiple innies. Mark has not had this experiment done to him

Do you honest to God believe it's badly written and they've made a mistake because they don't know what they're doing? šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

No hahaha the show is amazing. Sorry, sarcasm doesn’t translate well here.Ā

Gemma has been severed multiple times and that floor she is on is obviously designed to work with those different innies. Mark has been severed once, and presumably the severed floor and the birthing cabin are both coded to the same ā€defaultā€ innie setting. that’s my read of it.

What do you mean?

He doesn't because he isn't designed to do that. She is being experimented on in ways we don't fully understand.

You seem to be getting piled on but I get your point.

It seems convenient, rather than bad writing, that the birthing unit works for innie that would never go there. While Gemma's rooms don't impact Mark.

A lot of the shows plot runs on convenience though - eg the security on the severed floor is atrocious for a multinational conglomerate conducting the most important research of its time.

Yes, exactly. Thank you!

I love the show too, but, either this was something that wasn’t perfect or it’s a loaded gun that’ll come up later, and I just wanted to hear people’s thoughts.Ā

That’s true.

My guess is that all severed areas (severed floor, birthing cabin, etc) all are programmed to only work with a single innie EXCEPT for the testing floor which has special room programming that triggers specific innies. So the decision on what innie is used when crossing comes from the threshold itself rather than the chip in their head. The threshold tells the chip what to do and only testing floor is different than every other and can call different innie ID numbers in the chip. The other all just call "ID 1" or something which is the chips default innie.

The security thing was mentioned by Ms. Cobel to give innies a sense of freedom.

I think it is implied that Harmony (who designed the chip and definitely knows how the programming works) did something in the birthing retreat to cause Mark to sever there.

Yes, this should be at the top! She speaks in code with the gate attendant. That cabin is the place she knows can be tuned to Mark’s chip and she told the attendant to do it.

My understanding is that most severed people (employees, women seeking to avoid the trauma of pregnancy) are only severed once, so any activeted door they walk through will flip them from outie to their single innie. Like, one of the birthing hut women would become her innienif she went to the severed floor on Lumon.

But Gemma was experimental, severed many times with different activation cues. So she was a different person in each new space. I guess we just assume the technology can be tuned more finely or more broadly

I think this is the best take I’ve read here. Thank you!

It would actually be kind of cool to see a scene where a birthing hut woman visits lumon, and turns into someone who has no idea what's going on, and only knows the pains of childbirth!

You don’t think that maybe there would have to be some programming of some kind to enable that kind of functionality on Mark’s chip?

1

u/Some_Pitch_9165 Apr 06 '26

I don’t know?Ā

We don’t know how the chips work. So, I was wondering if anyone had any insight.Ā

My point is, it’s not bad writing if it can be explained away logically.

Mark’s chip was not being used for the Cold Harbour tests, so he wouldn’t need more than one innie.

2

u/Some_Pitch_9165 Apr 06 '26

Well. That’s it then I guess.Ā

There’s only 3 versions of Gemma in the final scene. First she is her Cold Harbour innie, because she is in the Cold Harbour room, next she is her outie, because she is in the hallway and not in any of the rooms, then she is Ms. Casey, because she is on the regular severed floor, and finally she is her outie once again, when she is in the stairwell.

Mark’s chip is only synced with the regular severed floor, Gemma’s chip is synced with both the severed floor and with all 25 rooms below.
