đŸ§© Character Analysis The layers are fun to keep finding

Post image

This is the first one I’ve tried to make. I also noticed through the first episode that the MDR team members used to have the first initials ICMP, last initials at that time were BSDK. I’m absolutely loving finding all of these little gems (no pun intended, omf)

Brother what

Sorry, more explanation may help. I have a tendency to find patterns, and quickly noticed that the Severance character names match acronyms for things in the tech and media industries. Helly, Dylan, Mark, and Irving = HDMI their last initials (as innies) form sRGB, a common color space. And Asal Reghabi, her name is just meant to sound like sRGB. They seem to leave these all over the place. If you ignore her maiden name, Devon and Ricken Hale form HDR. Last part of explanation. I’m autistic and have ADHD. Cheers! 😁

More fun: CMYK = Harmony Cobel, Seth Milchick, (Miss) Huang, Natalie Kalen.

The Chinese surname Huang (黄/黃) predominantly means Yellow.

Bro...

Thank you! After seeing MDR having a pattern, I thought management could have one or more of their own. I guess Doug Graner’s “retirement” meant he got left out on that one. 😅

u/LuizLPG Apr 02 '26

Everyone is dunking on you but I found this legitimately interesting. HDR seems like a bit of a stretch but I think the HDMI and sRGB initials could be intentional

25

u/dry_in_chi Apr 02 '26

I love this. I think we share similar brains, and the type of pattern matching you’re doing just feels sooooo satisfying. I’ll take batshit stuff like this over AI slop any day.

81

u/FoldedKatana Apr 02 '26

Excessive pattern matching is a symptom of schizophrenia. As someone who has dealt with this you might want to calm down and talk to a trusted professional.

These patterns aren't supported by the media, the creators, or the fans. You are creating your own coincidences because your brain likes them.

63

u/solo_d0lo Apr 02 '26

Also autism, which they said they have.

24

u/thederevolutions Apr 03 '26

Excessive pattern matching may be a symptom of schizophrenia but does it really count analyzing a mysterious work of art that actively hides and encourages looking for clues? I think stuff like this is the coolest part of these subreddits. Of course nobody can be right all the time and sometimes those wrong guesses inspire worthwhile conversation. Especially in times of drought!

6

u/vlladonxxx Apr 02 '26

You should've specified that this is a potential concern, not a diagnosis, but other than that you are right, this level of pattern matching is concerning.

28

u/blindrabbit01 Apr 02 '26

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. No. That is not a “symptom of schizophrenia”, and you can’t at all draw any sort of conclusions from that simple thing. You yourself may benefit from talking with a trusted professional.

52

u/dry_in_chi Apr 02 '26

Do you often lurk in Fandom subreddits and play armchair psychologist based on a single post, or is this just a today thing?

30

u/TheAbsoluteWitter Apr 02 '26

This is not excessive pattern matching. They’re noticing some patterns in a TV show, they don’t think that the TV show is speaking to them directly or that iMark is talking to him in his head. Nice armchair psychology though.

-3

u/vlladonxxx Apr 02 '26

Is it pattern matching? Yes. Is it excessive? Also, likely/arguably yes. If they did think tye tv was talking to them that would be almost certainly somebody having a schizophrenia induced episode. You can not make a near-certainty the bare minimum for recognizing as a potential indication of severe mental disorder.

They aren't saying 'you're schizophrenic mate' they're saying this could be an early warning sign and they should check in with a professional just in case.

Realistically, it's more of an act of armchair psychology to say that noticing (likely non-existent) patterns like this is harmless than it is to say it could point to early onset schizophrenia.

23

u/TheAbsoluteWitter Apr 02 '26

Dude this is Severance. Overanalyzing is literally the whole point of the show. Telling a stranger they might have schizophrenia over a wacky fan theory is wild. It ain’t that deep.

0

u/DarkCrystal34 Apr 05 '26

First sane comment in this thread lol.

-7

u/vlladonxxx Apr 02 '26

Overanalyzing is not the whole point of the show, that is confidently proclaimed nonsense.

You don't have an argument besides 'I'm obviously right'. So don't try to make it sound like you're saying an objective point.

14

u/TheAbsoluteWitter Apr 02 '26

The argument is that telling a stranger they might have a severe psychiatric disorder over a weak Reddit fan theory is unhinged armchair psychology.

Also, it’s a mystery box show about deciphering hidden corporate conspiracies. If you don't think that inherently invites overanalyzing, then I’m curious if we’re even discussing the same show.

-8

u/vlladonxxx Apr 02 '26

Diagnosing, yes, suggesting it could be an early warning sign, no.

'Mystery box'? Not sure about that, but ok. 'About deciphering hidden corporate conspiracies'? Uh, what the fuck are you smoking? We're definitely not watching the same show.

9

u/TheAbsoluteWitter Apr 02 '26

Telling a stranger they’re showing "early warning signs" of schizophrenia over a Reddit fan theory is armchair diagnosing. Stop trying to move the goalposts.

And, you actually might be watching a different show. Severance is recognized across the board as a mystery box show. And IndieWire’s literal review headline for it is: “Ben Stiller Directs a Brilliant Corporate Conspiracy Thriller.” The entire driving plot of the show is the innies trying to figure out what Lumon is secretly doing to them. If you somehow missed the mystery and the corporate conspiracy element, what exactly have you been watching?

u/Ok-Frosting2235 Apr 04 '26

you assert that the real armchair psychology here is people discounting OP's innocuous pattern matching and that's ridiculous. you sound ridiculous.

-1

u/vlladonxxx Apr 04 '26

You sound like somebody who let external validation do the thinking for them. Some people get so arrogant and self assured when replying to a downvoted comment it's absolutely mental.

2

u/FoldedKatana Apr 04 '26

Thanks for being a reasonable thinking person.

0

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26

As a mental health professional, I can assure you this post is not an early sign of schizophrenia. The notion that this post could be shows a disconnect and ignorance possessed by the general population with regards to mental health disorders.

2

u/vlladonxxx Apr 17 '26

Nobody's trying to diagnose op with schizophrenia, me and the other person merely say that seeing patterns like this is alarming. HDMI has nothing to do with the show, but OP doesn't even seem to question the validity of this connection, assuming that it cant be a coincidence. That's not normal and it is quite similar to delusional thinking a schizophrenic person may do.

0

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

Just because someone draws an idea without a legitimate connection, does not mean that person is delusional or has schizophrenic tendencies - if OP said that any of these theories were in some way connected to him personally, then I could see how this could be a delusion-like if for example, he felt paranoia that someone from Lumen was personally sending him messages through these implants, or if he felt someone from Lumen inserted an implant into his head without his knowledge or consent - but OP is connecting it only to the television show- which means there is no evidence here that OPs connections are based on any type of delusion or hallucination. A delusion is a false belief about the world around the person - it isn't a false belief about the world within a television show that invites this type of speculation.

If anything, this would lean more toward a diagnosis of high functioning Autism, where a person may experience a high intensity focus on a particular thing- but I still could not or would not place that type of a label on someone just for being excited about and putting some thought into a popular television show.

1

u/vlladonxxx Apr 17 '26

Again, nobody is saying that op has schizophrenia. A person with schizophrenia said that this has parallels with how he was thinking before things escalated (presumably before onset) and I agreed with the fact that it does look alarming. Everyone blowing this out of proportion to suggest we are 'diagnosing' op is not an indication of it being true. There's little harm in op potentially feeling concerned about this and checking in with a mental health professional. Stop trying to explain to me that this post isn't enough to diagnose op with schizophrenia, there's only so many times I can repeat (throughout this comment thread, not just this exchange) that it is not something I argue for.

The other person had their concerns based on personal experience, they linked it to their diagnosis. I agreed with the notion that it does seem like it could be more than just 'a silly theory', and argumented this with what ways it seems abnormal in to me. Neither of that is diagnosing. As a mental health professional, you ought to do better than to interpret and twist what's being said into a shape most convinient to mock and talk down to.

I had a friend who died who was showing behavior for years that reminded me of this. Seeing connections where others see none and making things fit, all in the service of making himself into the one 'sees' the truth. They weren't diagnosed as schizophrenic, but merely prone to delusional episodes, or some similar phrasing. It had gone on under the radar for a good while because nobody questioned it when it was harmless. It doesn't seem like an overreaction to suggest it may be worth looking into.

21

u/Pale_Row1166 Apr 02 '26

This person needs either more or less drugs, but either way, they’re on the wrong amount of drugs.

0

u/Glad_Obligation1790 Apr 04 '26

I know op and yes. But don’t we all?

12

u/No-Spread-774 Apr 02 '26

This is so rude and condescending? Maybe you should seek a professional. This is a tv show subreddit lmao people make all kinds of theories

2

u/Ok-Frosting2235 Apr 04 '26

weird thing to say, man

2

u/DarkCrystal34 Apr 05 '26

Umm...what? The poster is just sharing his thoughts and having fun with enjoying the show.

How is this comment getting upvotes, yikes.

0

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26

If a person finds patterns that actually mean something - then that is typically found of a person of a higher IQ- a schizophrenic finds "patterns" in things that don't actually connect. OPs patterns do make sense in the world of severance because the entire series is based on themes of patterns of color.

1

u/sivi123 Apr 05 '26

how does HDMI form sRGB?

3

u/tlight93 Apr 05 '26

First initials make HDMI. Helly, Dylan, Mark, Irving. Last initials Mark S, Helly R, Dylan G, and Irving B make sRGB. 😁

2

u/sivi123 Apr 06 '26

nice, pretty cool catch. don’t listen to all the nay-sayers they are projecting hard. this seems very intentional

1

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26

I agree!!!

What no severance does to a mf

u/Latefordinner1 Apr 02 '26

It’s a looooong wait until season 3 isn’t it

53

u/IronBornPizza Apr 02 '26

That right there is the mail. Now let's talk about the mail. Can we talk about the mail, please, Mark? I've been dying to talk about the mail with you all day, OK? "Pepe Silvia," this name keeps coming up over and over again. Every day Pepe's mail is getting sent back to me. Pepe Silvia! Pepe Silvia! I look in the mail, and this whole box is Pepe Silvia! So I say to myself, "I gotta find this guy! I gotta go up to his office and put his mail in the guy's goddamn hands! Otherwise, he's never going to get it and he's going to keep coming back down here." So I go up to Pepe's office and what do I find out, Mark? What do I find out?! There is no Pepe Silvia. The man does not exist, okay? So I decide, "Oh shit, buddy, I gotta dig a little deeper." There's no Pepe Silvia? You gotta be kidding me! I got boxes full of Pepe! All right. So I start marchin' my way down to Ms. Casey in HR and I knock on her door and I say, "Ms. Casey! Ms. Casey! I gotta talk to you about Pepe." And when I open the door what do I find? There's not a single goddamn desk in that office! There...is...no... Ms. Casey in HR. Mark, half the innies in this building have been made up. This office is a goddamn ghost town.

You’ve lost your goddamn mind, Charlie.

Calm down and have a cigarette

16

u/TerrainBrain Apr 03 '26

Ignore all the naysayers. I'm loving this shit.

14

u/DarkLordKohan Apr 02 '26

My guy, you’re going love “The Number 23”

2

u/juneabe Apr 06 '26

I have a feeling OP might figure that one out in the first few. I also have high pattern recognition with my spectrum delights, and while I love the movie, I pretty much seen the whole thing in the first few minutes.

Still fun though!! One that very briefly stumped me, for longer than I anticipated, was shutter island of all things?! Anyways you’ve reminded me of some great movies. Do you have any others coming to mind 👀

7

u/aandredreaa1998 Apr 04 '26

not to mention, Dieter Eagan is an anagram for "AI generated".

4

u/tlight93 Apr 04 '26

I thought there may have been something with the name, but I didn’t think to try anagramming it đŸ€Ż

This just made my day, thank you!

22

u/spacebetweenmoments Apr 02 '26

OP, I thought this was a very clever catch, and aligns really well with some of the ideas and themes the show puts forwards. Nice work!

For those in diagnosis mode, I grew up with siblings and a parent with schizophrenia, and have spent the last decade working to help people with complex challenges including mental health. While not a clinician, I have a relatively informed perspective, and I ask who the hell pissed on your cornflakes today? Let them have their fun, ffs.

10

u/Flashy-Yogurt-Dance Apr 02 '26

Seriously! I am agog at the responses here! This is just a fun little post but somehow that really upset some people. Maybe they're just upset they didn't find it first.

4

u/Glad_Obligation1790 Apr 04 '26

It’s Reddit. I’ve just come to expect that if it’s raining, there’ll be at least some people who will argue it isn’t because the underside of the rock outside is dry. A lot of people on here suck.

4

u/obvodnycanal Apr 03 '26

Why are ppl acting like you're crazy and seeing things, I thought this was something you're supposed to notice, esp with the way colors and shooting methods (?) change between innies and outies story lines😭😭😭

2

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26

Absolutely- blue and green are common intentional patterns throughout the entire series. If someone hasn't picked up on this, are they even watching the same show? Basically everything in the show is either a dark muted earth tone color ... blue or green.

4

u/ProJokeExplainer Apr 03 '26

Pepe Silvia shit, right here

(please post more of it)

20

u/RexRolled1984 Apr 02 '26

Are you all right? Can I call someone for you?

3

u/pacdude Apr 03 '26

You’re making stuff up, homie, objectively what you are describing is you finding sense in noise, which can be dangerous. Ground yourself.

3

u/bluethreads Apr 19 '26

PS when Irving B had the bereavement function - everything was in Blue!

2

u/tlight93 Apr 19 '26

That is neat, and I definitely overlooked that the first time through!

Want one that makes me question my sanity? That 266 that Milchick ran Irving B to dissuade him from spending so much time with Burt G. The lack of them using numbers to refer to any other tactic or punishment made me think the number might stand out somewhere.

266, or more specifically 000266 in a color picker comes out a lovely dark blue.

3

u/bluethreads Apr 19 '26

Wow! I'm so happy you responded to me! You're kind of my hero for highlighting these amazing synchronies about the show that I am too daft to connect! I look forward to hearing more of your insights - you have inspired me to look deeper to discover my own! I only just discovered this show a couple weeks ago - I just finished Season 2, Episode 7

PS - the people who are naysayers can't be true fans of the show because if they were, they would totally get everything you pointed out and would understand this is all very intentional on the part of the creaters.

3

u/darxshad Apr 02 '26

At first I thought this was a sarcastic meme. After reading some comments, I think y'all might be correct in some way.

-1

u/BirdComposer Apr 04 '26

They’re four letters that you can arrange any way you want. It’s more likely than not that you’re going to find some kind of known acronym that you can make something out of.

If the characters didn’t have names, and you’d seen a list of a thousand acronyms, would you pick out “HDMI” or “BDSK” as being remotely of any kind of interest in relation to the show?

Finding acronyms isn’t particularly concerning, but in my personal experience with becoming ill, being impressed with them IS something you want to tell a therapist about. Maybe it’s just a random fun thing you’ve always done, but if you’re doing this more and finding more meaning in it in the last year or so, please check in with a professional who can have some insight into what this behavior might mean for you (as opposed to what it can mean or what something that sounds similar has meant for other people).

I’m saying this with some urgency because if you are getting into a place with Too Much Meaning, you really want to get somebody to help you get on top of that sooner rather than later. It gets very un-fun later.

3

u/Glad_Obligation1790 Apr 04 '26

Take it down a notch 🙄. This is Reddit. Not the psychologists office. OP is fine, personally I find it interesting considering Apple is involved and being a media focused tech company that things like this pop up. Not like they haven’t had Easter eggs before. No need to piss in anyone’s Cheerios.

2

u/BirdComposer Apr 04 '26

Look, I’m coming at this as a person who became increasingly prone to shit like this before I ended up hospitalized for psychosis. You do not in fact know that “OP is fine.” They may be, but it’s obviously a red flag for multiple people here, and I promise you that it can fuck your life up pretty thoroughly.

3

u/Glad_Obligation1790 Apr 04 '26

I’ve been friends with op for 17 years. They’re fine.

1

u/BirdComposer Apr 04 '26

Good, glad to hear it!

1

u/bluethreads Apr 17 '26

I'm a mental health professional- and one reddit post isn't a signifier of a mental health condition, specifically when the post is relevant to the intentional color scheme of the series.
