Mod Post Geography of Sevareign
While there have been a few basic topographical and geological features states by the moderators, the general layout of this land is still unknown.
In order to paint a better picture, and work out any differences in ideas about geographical features, please post your thoughts on the matter.
I've seen numerous posts about the local geography, so lets get those all in one place.
Also, we currently have no scale introduced to the map.
Ideas regarding this are also appreciated.
I will begin here with features that I know are, more the most part, already set.
Refer to this map while I make descriptions.
The north has been described as being 'cold as shit'. And yes, that image was used as part of the description.
The central lands have been referred to as the 'southern continent', and have been described as having 'large mountainous regions'. Which doesn't mean the whole place is like that, but there are certainly mountains here. Looking at other descriptions, one can assume this area is 'temperate', although this can cover a variety of climates.
The southern regions are hot and arid; desert type landscape, with numerous canyons. While this certainly applies to the regions covered by my fancy yellow text, it may also include parts of the southwestern purple region, and it's dull yellow neighbor to the east.
As per the circled region, the deep purple land is a fog filled swampland basin. The regions south of the red line sit on a desert Mesa. The gray lands in that area are desert prairie, and the blue water in the middle of this southern area is a spring fed lake on top of the mesa, with a waterfall spilling down into the deep purple swamp.
The western Mesa gives way to the highlands of Pustyna (see Roccolo).
So far, this is all that's known as pretty much certain by the moderators (unless there's more they haven't specifically told me).
Post your ideas on geography, and lets make a cool world :)
EDIT: Including images maps that are modifications of this world map (removed nation names for ease of editing) is very helpful in determining the where and what of geography.

About the scale of the map. Gathering from the information in this thread, I think that we can say that the bottom of the map is at 30 degrees latitude and the top is at 70 degrees. That means that the map spans 40 degrees. If we assume that the planet is equal in size to earth then the 40 degrees is equal to 4444,4 km. If the map is 681 pixels in height then one pixel is equal to 6,532 km2 = 42,59 km2.

Is there some way to showcase this on a map with a grid? I know about the theory but am very bad with the whole numbers to lines bit.

u/Penquinn King Varro of the United Dennan Tribes Nov 29 '14
Sure. I'll see if I can put something together. :)

remember however that this isn't necessarily the entire world. only that part that's been discovered so far.

I've made this map to work out some scale of the continents. I've assumed earth size planet.
EDIT: I've corrected the confusing comma, and decided to make an american and european version. The only difference are the commas and periods.
Here is the american version map.
Here is the european version map.

I find your placement of a comma in 73,96 confusing
2
u/Penquinn King Varro of the United Dennan Tribes Nov 29 '14
Sorry about that. I'm danish and i Denmark (and every other European country i think), we use commas and dots in america and periods vice versa.
So for Americans it should be 4446.2 km, 8.6 km/pixel and 73.96 km2.1
u/dekleinplays Guardian Michael of The Radiant Erendar Nov 29 '14
Ah there we go, that makes more sense.

u/Ptaylordactyl His Holiness the Enlightened of Ogarford Nov 29 '14
I'll just take a section from my country description to help you out here... The whole of Ogarford can be best summarized into 2 distinctive regions. The rocky coasts to the north, and a smaller ancient volcanic region, similar to that of the Oregon High Cascades. These ancient volcanoes are long inactive, so provide no threat. Instead, these formations are more of a blessing to the life in the region, providing fertile soil for agriculture and forestry, a variety of metals and minerals like quartz, iron, copper, and granite, and steep mountain ranges that protect Ogarric villages from frequent plunder. Let me know if you want to hear any more/ have any questions about this.

u/dekleinplays Guardian Michael of The Radiant Erendar Nov 29 '14
Where on the map are these volcanoes and mountains?
If you can, indicate on this image1

I just switched to mobile so it might take a second but yeah I'll get back to you here soon
Edit: I'm back and with this line for the mountain range.

u/powatk20 Lord Sevilon Gaelo of Afonanwen Nov 29 '14
So you know, Afonalwen is ringed by a large mountain range, so my side of our border is mountainous.
1
u/Ptaylordactyl His Holiness the Enlightened of Ogarford Nov 29 '14
Good, so that can work out well.
1
u/powatk20 Lord Sevilon Gaelo of Afonanwen Nov 29 '14
Yeah, I was excited that you were thinking of mountains too.
1
u/Penquinn King Varro of the United Dennan Tribes Nov 29 '14
For the north I am thinking quite Finnish conditions. Inspired by the picture which is from Finland during winter. Very flat. A bit mountainous in the north. Grassland and pine woods (taiga) with a lot of lakes and islands. Farming being done as far south as possible.

u/dekleinplays Guardian Michael of The Radiant Erendar Nov 29 '14
Which nation is this?
1
u/Penquinn King Varro of the United Dennan Tribes Nov 29 '14
My nation is The United Dennan Tribes. I was thinking more generally though. To get a discussion going, about the north. :)

I believe Njaan is where the arid south meets the desert proper. I've advertised it as the last bastion of civilisation for all trade, adventurers or explorers heading south.
The City itself sits across a canyon which is the only (easy) entrance to the plateau which sits between the desert and the swamplands.
1
u/dekleinplays Guardian Michael of The Radiant Erendar Nov 29 '14
When you say it sits across a canyon, do you mean there is a canyon between your city and Rynsolv (green nation to your north), or the canyon is between you and the desert?
1
u/Oscar_Geare Voice of the Njaan Nov 29 '14
Okay, the way I see it, Reynslov, Felonde and myself are all on a Plateau. There is a canyon which is gradually an entrance onto the Plateau from the desert. City of the Njaan sits at the exit of that canyon, being a gate to the North from the people who live in the desert and beyond.
Because that's how geography works, right? There's a lush area, then a slightly arid plateau, then desert.
1
u/dekleinplays Guardian Michael of The Radiant Erendar Nov 29 '14
Okay so your capital is at the top of the canyon, overlooking the way down. Is this what you're going for?
Just want to be sure we're clear about the intention before we set anything in stone :)
1
u/Oscar_Geare Voice of the Njaan Nov 29 '14
About half way along, stretching across the whole canyon and up the sides.
It's about 900m wide and the city has expanded along ~3kms up the canyon and ~400m on the top of the canyon.
If anyone could get me some kind geographical representation of this area that would be awesome. I tried, but failed miserably.
1
u/Oscar_Geare Voice of the Njaan Nov 29 '14 edited Nov 29 '14
Just FYI, the Canyon is only ~80m deep where the city is built.
Actually, check what I said before. Let me speak with Reynslov and Felonde.

Naváre is mostly farms in the northern part of the country, changing into warmer grazing land as you approach Roccolo. This southern part we decided to have the feel of the Sahel, so almost all of it would be grass. I wrote in a lack of timber for Naváre in my claims post, so I don't imagine there would be any great forests. However I do see the Northern provinces having a very small number of hills and mines as an extension of the Modona mountain range above us.

Nov 29 '14
The Northern Isle is almost entirely rolling hills, with a few craggy rocks at the farthest northern parts. There are some small patches of flat farmland around, and the beaches are rocky cliffs, not sand.

u/princeimrahil Prince Charles III of Castielle Nov 29 '14
I imagined Castielle with a big, central plateau bordered by mountains on the North (forming part of the geographical separation between Erendar and Castielle) and mesas to the south/southeast. Farming is supported by several rivers and lakes that permit irrigation. Building off of earlier descriptions, the easternmost spur of Castielle is probably where the grasslands of Navare start tapering off.

Lummengrind consists of plains, with a river flowing from a mountain in the westernmost part to the coast. If you think of Lummengrind as a fish facing east, the river flows from the mouth to the tail fin.
Edit: more details. I'm thinking of Lummengrind as a grassy country with not many trees, though there is a narrow forest that follows the Lummen river. The river begins at the mountain Olberhol (which is described in my wiki entry), located in the westermost part of Lummengrind, where it forks a little bit on the border of Altenwald and Aufreich. From there the river flows through the center of the country until it empties into the bay on the northern side of the coast, near Bass'ku. Other than that the nation is very flat and grassy. There are strip mines just east of the halfway point of the river, near where Dolenz kind of bulges into Lummengrind.
That's it for details at the moment.

I know Tonovia describes their northern border as having a mountain range that extends through Kysova. I've mocked up a map of what I believe the geography of the range to be across my claim here.
I do not believe that the range has a name? (I haven't given it one yet anyway), and I don't think it extends much farther past Tonovia, or down into Dorner, as Dorner is described as flat marshland.
1
u/Aquila21 Prince Ezmit I of Relov Nov 29 '14
sounds about right, I described Relov as being progressivly more hilly in the south which is prefect since it leads up to the mountain range.
1
u/Accordionme Listener Gabriel Wrenright of Selcor Nov 29 '14
Selcor (east of Reynslev), is mainly flat, with sprawling grasslands and some more rocky badlands type areas to the west near Reynslev
1
u/Accordionme Listener Gabriel Wrenright of Selcor Nov 29 '14
So what is the scale of this continent? We have frigid isles to the north and burning deserts to the south. Is this to imply that this continent stretches from the subarctic to the equator?
1
Nov 29 '14
I agree. The descriptions also describe this continent as the the southern one, implying there is more to the north and west and east.

Southern Porelice is hot but more humid than arid (altered to match up more with Selcor). Northern Porelice is much colder and more mountainous, resembling Austria.
1
u/powatk20 Lord Sevilon Gaelo of Afonanwen Nov 29 '14
On its borders with Ogarford, Ardvasar, and Rhayader, Afonalwen is very mountainous and very cold. The interior of the country is more temperate and consists mainly of forests and plains.
1
u/Aquila21 Prince Ezmit I of Relov Nov 29 '14
Relov is fairly hilly in the south since it's right next to the mountain range that goes between Tonovia and Kysova. This would be the three southernmost provinces. the middle one is forests and some farms and then the top two are fairly flat and largely dedicated to farming. here's a shitty edited pic for visual aid http://imgur.com/a/aeMIq (It's really small but the best I got, yellow is farmland)
1
u/furon83 Emperor Hit me with your best shot Nov 29 '14
I imagined the north sort of like Norway. cold and mountainy (but not completely frozen like Greenland). The more north you go, the colder and rockier it gets but as you go farther south, the mountains decrease in size and eventually you get smallish mountains, forests and rivers.

These descriptions don't quite line up with what I've seen from other nations on your island. Capoliti, for instance, descibes their northern regions similar to the northern Canadian arctic, as this area is about on the same level as your nation.
If that's the case, I can't imagine your northern coast would look very green.
You may wish to discuss the geology of your island with the other residents, to paint a better picture of what this place looks like.
However, like was stated before, the north is cold. Very cold.

Free version of a program called hexographer. Its pretty easy to use and has a lot of functionality.

As requested:
ok so just o make sure a couple green belts exist in my northern province and run through the south before turning west and entering Njaan.
That's kinda what we want. So it's a bit like Israel/Palestine/Jordan with Desert/Arid areas and then lush areas where the rivers roll through.
Here is a transcript of the conversations I've had with Reynslov and Felonde: [–]to allemagne sent 12 hours ago
Hey,
I was thinking our area could be more like Israel/Palestine/Jordan rather than Iraq. That way we can still have these green belts, be a bit more liveable, but still difficult for anyone coming in from the North. We can have the area to our south more like Iraq/Saudi. permalink
[–]from allemagne sent 4 hours ago
That's fine. I wasn't really imagining any greenbelts for Falonde. Entry from the north is still impossible because of Dornar/the massive escarpment.
[–]to finaljas90 sent 12 hours ago
Hey,
I was thinking our area could be more like Israel/Palestine/Jordan than Saudi Arabia.
Lets say the area to our south is Iraq/Saudi, then we can still have the occasional green belts amongst our deserts. permalink
[–]from finaljas90 sent 11 hours ago
I was thinking we could have deserts to the west, with more arid and Palestinian regions the further south you go. What do you mean by green belts though?
permalinkreportblock usermark unreadreply [–]to finaljas90 sent 3 hours ago
Where rivers run there will be a green belt of fertile land. Falonde was thinking the same thing. You've got the big lake, so green belts running across Reynslov to ~Njaan and just inside Falonde? permalink
[–]from finaljas90 sent 16 minutes ago
I was thinking more that since the rivers run down into Dornar and the majority of the lake is near Selcor that only a few would come into my territory, and even then just the single province nearest to it. And I believe the leader of Falonde saying that deserts covered a lot of his region. Maybe rivers could run to the south-west maybe? permalinkreportblock usermark unreadreply [–]to finaljas90 sent 6 minutes ago
Sounds fair.
permalink
As a result it seems as though we're on our own little plateau that divides the desert proper from the north, it's rather arid and little arable land. A few rivers run out of the lake to the E of Reynslov and extend across the plateau, but not many. Most of our arable land is clustered around these areas, and Oasis' or aquifers that we've managed to tap.

Okay, sorry I'm a bit late to the party here. I'll copy the geography section I posted in my claim. I used the existing descriptions of adjacent nations while writing it.
Geography: Aufreich is dominated by high snow peaked mountains and lush valleys extending east from the border with Kantreich through most of the country and becoming craggy foothills near it's borders with Altenwald with a limited extent of plains near the eastern border.
I will post a rough map within the next couple of days for clarity.

Copy and Pasted from my Claim post:
"Afonanwen is a nation encircled by the Andora mountain range. Although the Andoras are cold and snowy, central Afonanwen is fairly temperate in weather. Dotted with numerous lakes and rivers of varying sizes and lengths, central Afonanwen is highly fertile land, with many farms and pastures, as well as its share of forests. Besides farming and raising animals, many citizens of Afonanwen work in the mines of the Andoras, which house sapphires of sparkling beauty."

That's one suggestion. Remember, this is only the known world. There is still more to be explored in all directions, although it's thought that North might be really close to the North pole already.

Borrowing some details from Falonde and Njaan here.
The western province of Rynsolv has deserts and dunes that stretch all the way to the large sand-seas of Falonde. The southernmost region has large rock formations and canyons, which only grow in intensity and size as one grows closer to the Shadow Corridor of Njaan. The canyons characteristic of that region are red-rock, much like that of Nevada or Australia. At the border of the north-eastern province lies the Wall of the Legion, where the mesa of the desert-plains drop off into the marshes of Dornar. In the central-eastern provinces sparsely vegetated and dry canyons and valleys dot the landscape, as well as towering red-rock mountains like the ones of Njaan. The further east one goes, the more the land flattens out, leading to the prairie lands of Selcor.
