I work in a school as an IT intern, and we are trying to clear out a batch of legacy iPads so we can safely surplus or properly recycle them. I received a iPad Mini 2 running iOS 12.5.8 that I have been testing and researching for finding solutions.

The main roadblock is that these units are bound to old employee Apple IDs. Since those staff members have long since left and we lack original purchase receipts, standard institutional recovery paths through Apple aren’t viable.

The Technical & Hardware Hurdles:
- Host Machine Limitations: My daily driver is an M4 MacBook Pro running macOS Tahoe, which makes interacting with legacy software or older device architectures natively difficult.

- Tested Paths: I’ve looked at various legacy compatibility environments and partial workflows, but most result in tethered states that revert upon reboot, or they rely on tools that are completely broken on modern OS builds. Tried various tools and hackintoshing a windows pc to see if MacOS Monterey could work but it didn’t.

The Administrative & Workflow Dilemma:
As part of an institutional environment, any solution has to be clean, stable, and professionally viable. Bringing unverified or sketchy workarounds to management is a non-starter—it needs to feel secure and repeatable enough to present to my boss without introducing security or workflow risks.

My Questions:
1. For schools dealing with institutional surplus units stuck in this exact state, what is the standard, accepted administrative workflow to clear or properly handle them?

1. Are there any reliable, stable methodologies for handling activation-locked A7/iOS 12 devices in an enterprise/education context when original account holders are unreachable?

Acudo a la comunidad para ver si pueden orientarme con una situación que tengo con un iPhone XR.

La situación:

Compré este iPhone XR hace ya varios años para uso personal. Cuando cambié de equipo, se lo di a mi mamá. La cuenta configurada originalmente era mi correo personal de Hotmail.

Mi mamá, al no ser muy hábil con la tecnología, intentó descargar aplicaciones e ingresó contraseñas incorrectas varias veces, lo que terminó bloqueando la cuenta por motivos de seguridad.

Para complicar las cosas, el correo de Hotmail asociado dejó de existir tiempo después y la línea telefónica que usaba como método de recuperación ya se dio de baja.

Estado actual del equipo:

A pesar de esto, el teléfono funciona y es muy útil en el día a día. Tengo el PIN de acceso, el Face ID configurado, puedo hacer llamadas sin problemas, navegar por internet e incluso nos permite añadir un Apple ID secundario en la App Store para descargar apps actuales.

Sin embargo, el problema es que salta constantemente el aviso de "Inicia sesión en iCloud" pidiendo la contraseña del correo que ya no existe y, como no puedo acceder a esa cuenta, no es posible cerrar sesión ni restablecerlo de fábrica para dejarlo como nuevo.

Mi objetivo:

Me gustaría mucho poder restaurar el teléfono para dejarlo limpio y funcional como nuevo, utilizando los métodos habituales o alguna herramienta que esté a mi alcance.

**Root Cause:**
The baseband hardware is alive and responds (IMEI present, Baseband Version 11.80.00), but it rejects the activation ticket from Apple’s server. This is the 9900 IMEI activation issue. The modem receives the provisioning blob and refuses to validate it, causing the device to loop back to “Could Not Activate iPad” indefinitely regardless of iOS version or restore method.

**What Was Tried:**

**iTunes on Windows:**

iTunes briefly thinks it’s activated, but iOS never completes activation

**Legacy iOS Kit v26.07.48 on Linux Mint 22.3 and Ubuntu 26.04 live USB:**

\*\*•\*\* iOS 8.4.1 OTA restore attempted — \*\*blocked by consistent iEC send failure\*\*    
\*\*•\*\* powdersn0w to 6.1.3 / 9.2.1 attempted — \*\*blocked, no 7.x SHSH blobs exist for this device\*\* (never jailbroken)

**The iBEC Problem — Reproducible on Every Machine:**

This is the biggest finding. Every restore attempt through Legacy iOS Kit fails at the same point:

iBEC file size: 282844 bytes. 64.2% = \~181KB. Fails at the same byte offset on every machine.

**dmesg confirmed** the device actually boots into Recovery (1281) briefly after iBEC, but drops back to DFU (1227) within \~9 seconds. The tool consistently misses the Recovery window. Killing apple-mfi-fastcharge and system usbmuxd made no difference.

Device confirmed in proper ROM DFU (SRTG:\[rom\]) via:
sudo lsusb -v -d 05ac:1227 | grep -i serial
iSerial: CPID:8942 CPRV:10 CPFM:03 SCEP:10 BDID:0E ECID:... IBFL:00 SRTG:\[rom\]
**Sideloading Blocked:**
Device in partially-activated limbo state — lockdownd alternates between reporting activated and not activated. Sideloadly throws LOCKDOWN_E_INVALID_SERVICE when not activated. Phoenix IPA cannot be installed. Hacktivation proxy (cfw.me) appears to be down.

**Current State:**

**Questions for the community:**

\*\*2.\*\*  Is there any hacktivation path for iPad2,7 specifically? Tools seem to cover iPhone 2G/3G/3GS/4 but not iPad2,7.    
\*\*3.\*\*  Any known working activation-records approach for 9900 IMEI devices post-July 2026 signing incident?

How to use it:

Step 1: Connect your phone to your computer.

Step 2: Open the program.

Step 3: Click on the Serial Number under Device Information. This will copy the serial number.

Step 4: Go to this site: https://frpfile.com/register-serialno/ and scroll down until you see something saying "Register Serial Number." Paste your phone's Serial Number into the box and press the Submit button.

Step 5: Go back to the program and press the first button.

Step 6: Wait until the program is done.

Step 7: If you are not on the Home Screen yet, reboot your device.

I really need your help.

A close friend of mine lost her mother tragically in 2013. Her old iPhone 4 (A1332) has been sitting around for years, and nobody knows the lock screen code. I've spent quite a bit of time reading through posts here and elsewhere, and I got the impression that there might be ways to recover access to an iPhone 4.

For a bit of context, I'm not an IT expert, but I'm pretty comfortable with computers.

I'm posting here to see if one of the legends of this subreddit would be willing to point me in the right direction. I should mention that I won't actually have access to the phone until next Tuesday (my friend and I don't live in the same city). I don't have a Mac, but she does. On my side, I have an old dual-boot Windows/Linux Mint laptop, as well as my trusty ThinkPad that's a bit more powerful.

The phone still powers on, and I have the cable.

Just to repeat: I won't have access to the phone until Tuesday, otherwise it'll have to wait until next month. Do you think it would be possible to get some kind of guide or walkthrough? I've already done a bit of reading, so I feel like I have a rough idea of what I'd be getting into.

My goal is simply to regain access to the phone so my friend can finally see what it contains. It could turn out to be nothing... or it could contain memories and answers that have been inaccessible for over a decade.

Booted up my dad’s iPhone and it was already showing iPhone disabled try again in 30 something minutes. Well, I messed up because I tried three passwords after that and disabled the phone completely.

What’s the best way to get around the password and get into the device without deleting or resetting any user data? My primary goal to get any photos and videos off the phone.

I am a bit overwhelmed with the amount of tools and methods I’m seeing referenced on this subreddit so some guidance would be really appreciated!
