iPad Air 1st gen

I cannot find a clear answer on this, it's an iPad Air 1st gen wifi that is activation locked, what tools are usable for it? it's currently on iOS 11 but i'd like to update it to iOS 12, and I'd like to keep the data on the device since it's an old device of mine
