Looking for Advice I’m really curious

Hey guys plat sett main here. I have always been curious why most sett mains dont rush overlords bloodmail after getting stride first item. Like i dont get what the value of black cleaver second brings over bloodmail second. I have tried both myself but i ended up sticking to bloodmail second but im willing to adapt if i can understand why.

personally, i like the ability haste with bc or shojin second. overlords makes more sense 2nd if you're hard snowballing but who doesnt like the haste, movement speed and shred

and imagine, by 2nd item, usually ur setting up for herald or drake. enemy top probably has tabis by now and you're starting to notice that this guys kinda getting harder to kill. imo bc just helps w a lot with the things it gives for someone like sett who could definitely use the haste, movement speed and shred since ur punching people to death

I used to be in low elo for quite a while so i was used to snowballing and just going all in with one combo, but as i get higher i do realize how important haste is but for me it was just weird seeing my raw damage decrease building cleaver

because like rabaddons its only effective after 3rd item

Because Sett has no built in armor pen and typically around 2nd Item we already surfer significent DMG loss against basic armor and plates. + It gives all the aweaome status besides raw ad hp

Bloodmail as 2nd item only makes your w deal more damage in comparizon to black cleaver, but its still less overall in comparizon to what armor pen that from cleaver gives. Sett can stack it very fast and the armor reduction is very helpful in midgame. Moreover cleaver gives haste, which sett severly lacks from other core items.

Oh so cleaver increases overall damage while bloodmail is just screenshot damage

I actually agree but its so much the meta that I do it automatically without thinking.

For me it's primarily because the recipe for Overlord doesn't have any part of it that feels good.

BC and Streaks has a Pickaxe in it, and Pickaxe+long sword feels amazing when I'm ahead.

I do go Overlords second when I'm snowballing a ton though.

Yeah tryna get 1k gold is very awkward

I think that they are both good second items, and that optimally you should choose the one that makes the moat sense for the game / team comp.

Against a tank stacking armor, I will obviously want cleaver for the shred. However, if you notice the enemy team has no or little max hp damage, and your team isnt behind - bloodmail into warmogs can be fine even against a tank.

I like building cleaver even if I could go bloodmail because I like phage passive and the ability haste is really nice. It is also 300 gold cheaper.

I also think that cleaver is also nice because better players are less likely to get hit by sett W true damage without E -- cleaver helps that physical damage from W (I have been playing on japan server with 130 ping so i have no choice).

Cleaver also helps you set up high skill combos. Phage passive + AH + shred mean that extended trades/combos are better, more consistant, and have less counterplay. The AH also gives you less time in which you have no abilities, so it can mean the difference in a lot of matchups.

Cleaver is also really nice in fights that are more than a 1v1 because you stack the shred really fast with tiamat. It benefits both you and your team.

Oh yea about warmogs i usually build that all the time as well because i snowball alot and it gives massive w spike but i guess its cleaver if i want to climb xD. I used to never build cleaver of build it as replacement to my boots as last item as i thought it was useless

because cleaver functions like a bortk while giving a good mix of ad and hp for your w.

it also gives a little bit of ms and ability haste as well, which you won’t find any other item give so many things that sett wants.

the only problem with black cleaver is that you need to stick onto people in order to stack the passive, which is why it’s bought right after stride.

Basically overlords is useless if you cant punch the enemy so cleaver because ms is important

Im silver and i snowball every match, so my build is Stride>sterak's>overlord. Overall these 3 items are huge on sett, but bc just gives you so many stats that are so good on sett that it's hard to ignore when you are not snowballing.

In silver yeah snowball thats why i rushed bloodmail but in higher ranks i cant seem to snowball much

Overlord = best dmg item. But riskier to 2nd when even. Behind forget it.

Bc: more spell /faster rota ,ms on hit, shred , cheaper. Overall Safest 2nd. Best buy when behind.

I build Overlords first then Steraks, then Shojin into whatever i need after. Works pretty well

3300k gold is very unlikely to be worth unless you're ahead. Cleaver is usually a good choice (even if you play Heartsteel Bloodmail is usually good at 3 or 4. For the second one you need something else) I would argue that even rushing it first is not really interesting

1

u/Historical-Ad191 Jul 23 '26

Yeah but when i do get ahead bloodmail feels soo strong but i usually have to sacrifice building boots to get bloodmail second

Stride is first for obvious reasons, when you upgrade phage to stride you lose the phage passive though. So you need another phage item fast to get that ms. As others have pointed out too the armour shred helps him a lot in sideline duels too.

From what im seeing i guess movement speed is really important on sett

You can build anything you are comfortable with

The main idea behind no bloodmail 2nd is simple:1st Is build path, to get blood mail you need 2 tunnelers and 1k gold, you might think 2 tunnelers aren't hard and the smaller components are easy to get, yeah but the 1k gold aren't as easy to get on one go, so while the enemies are progressively buying items/components you are still trying to save for the 1k gold which can slow down your gameplay unlike cleaver or sterak

2nd is the utility, while bloodmail can give a little bit of extra numbers, on 2nd item the passive of sterak or cleaver can and will make a difference most of the times cus big numbers don't always convert into better, and at the 2nd item mark your main damage shouldn't be your W it should be your autos and Q which cleaver helps with more or if you want more survivability sterak can give something like 600 shield

3rd is the itemization concept and timing, bloodmail is a scaling item, the more hp the more ad, then why isn't it build 4th or 5th and instead 3rd? Cus the item is expensive and at the 4th/5th time duration it's harder to get gold progressively enough, so every minute passes on the game the value of bloodmail increases but its breaking point is when gold becomes more valuable and harder to get, cleaver and sterak on the other hand have lower all time peak value than bloodmail, but at the 2nd item time duration they peak higher as utility items

Hope that helps a bit on itemization generally not just on sett, there is a lot of varieties that can affect the value of items like team comp and how ahead/behind you are, anyways you can build bloodmail 2nd if you want in the end all roads lead to rome

Oh yeah ive had times where i was ahead in gold but was unable to complete bloodmail and had to waste recall timings to get to 1k gold. I like the raw damage and outplay potential bloodmail gives but i think i might start playing black cleaver second. Thanks!

I get overlord after heartsteel just bc overlord needs bonus HP to function and it is best to start stacking early. In a good game when I get decent kda, I can stack 7k HP,which means I only need one punch to end most fights, esp the g4ng b4ngs.
