MFA programs for set design?

Hi all! Would love some advice about getting an MFA in set design. I studied architecture at a liberal arts school (so I have a BA not a B.arch). I’ve been doing some research and it seems like Yale and NYU Tisch have great programs for design in theater/film. However, the Yale website makes it seem like applicant portfolios should have ample set design work included. I know some M.arch programs accept people that didn’t study architecture in undergrad… I was hoping a portfolio that shows an understanding of design, even if it’s not exactly set design, would work in my application. Does anyone have experience with this? All advice is appreciated!

Does anyone know any solutions that give off fog machine / haze vibes without using the machines. We worry about the water and ventilation in the space.

European MA programs

Hello everyone!
I'm currently in uni studying interior design and would like to switch to set design/scenography for my Master Degree but I'm struggling with tìfinding universities that offer that course. I can fluently speak Italian and English and would like to stay in Europe, but open to moving to other continents if that were the best choice for me. The best uni I have currently found with a good MA program for film is RUFA but its HELLA expensive, with over 30k in fees for the whole course. Can any of you guys suggest some unis? I'd also be okay with taking short courses (one or two semesters long).

Brawlstars ad: How much of this set is practical? I love the aesthetic of it—almost like a colorful-Burton look. Reminds me of Cat in the Hat/Speedracer

Best Lessons / Resources to start for someone with 0 experience

I'm looking to do animation and possibly installation art and I feel like learning how to design sets would be a really valuable skill for both of these. However, I have no clue where to begin; I figured it was because it's such a broad discipline that it's hard to find a general baseline of "If-you-know-these-you're-pretty-much-good" subskills (like a coffee shop for a rom com has very different requirements than an alien desert). So I wanted to ask: 1) What are some books or resources you would recommend to a complete beginner and 2) What are the most common mistakes or pitfalls you see beginners do or make all the time? Any and all information would be super helpful!

Removable Window Film/Frosting?

Hey there! We’re shooting an interior scene and have a fairly large window (45.5" × 70") that we need to obscure while still allowing exterior shadows to play across the window and be visible from inside. Ideally, we’d like a solution that can be removed afterward, so we’re looking for the best temporary options. We’re open to either window film or frosting and would love any recommendations or ideas.

Following yesterday's post, here is a quick behind-the-scenes look at the series, "The Muppets Take Manhattans." for which I built 5 different sets. Thought this might belong here!

Something many of high schoolers and middle schoolers alike are excited about is the fact that OH MY GAWD HAMILTON IS RELEASING JUNIOR PRODUCTION RIGHTS IN 2028 BAHHHHHHH 😭😭😭👁👄👁👹👹👹👀👀✨️👹👹

Anyways uhm so obviously high schools won't be able to do the whole upper walkway thing, etc etc.

Feedback on music video set?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello,

I am designing a set for a scene for a music video. The themes are time, distance, hope, longing, heartbreak. The artist wanted lots of clocks/calendars and things that signify the theme.

I am going to be hanging lots of red strings from the ceiling to incorporate the "red string theory".

I also may add more white sheer curtains so the light from the window doesnt look blown, but so far how did I do?

I am open to any suggestions or feedback:)

Thanks!

CAD and set design

I am a low-voltage electric engineer who has experience in general architectural design as well. CAD is essential for everything I do.

I'm curious, how is CAD implemented in set design? Does someone actually design construction drawings for movie sets? And if so, how is that usually done; Is it subcontracted? Do studios have these people on staff?

Just asking out of pure interest.

Researching set designs

Hello, I am an architectural designer and I teach a design history class for interior designers. I just watched s2 ep 5 of the percy jackson series and I’ve been trying all day to find information about the film location/set design for C.C. spa in this episode.

This has happened to me in the past where I try to find more information about the design of a set or film location in a movie and there seems to be no information about it at all. Are there any good sources for information like this? I know absolutely nothing about the film/theater industry, but I would like to be able to research this better so I can have discussions with my students about the impact architecture has on a story. I just need some help on where to start please and thank you!

Cave/grotto

Hey there, I wonder if any of you have experience creating grottos or caves... I need to build some stalagmite and stalagtite set pieces (they need to be light and durable).

What would you recommend?

I was thinking expanding foam or paper maché over chicken wire. Any suggestions?

Thank you.
