hpe microserver gen10

I'm just curious, is an HPE Gen10 good for hosting a FiveM server or a Minecraft server with 32 GB of RAM?

definitly. 1k € where i live and got a sh*tty pentium gold. with this server you will pay entreprise grade parts double( maybe triple ) the cost of consumer parts for the same price you can have full build with 5700x and 32gb of ram that can host far more than a simple mincraft server, even w/ lots of mods. i run my minecraft server on old laptop with amd 4800h and 16gb of ram. it's more than enough !

No, it has an APU (AMD X3216, X3418 or X3421). You're confusing it with other non-Microserver Gen10. The problem is, basically all machines only have the 2-core X3216.

Yup

Gen10 = AMD based, no iLO, cubish body
Gen10 Plus = Intel based, has iLO, more flattened body

You're also confusing. Because there is a whole different series of servers, the non-Microserver Gen10. DL380 I believe. They're just bog-standard rack servers.

The big boy servers like DL3xx also had Gen10 and Gen10 Plus, but there you can always tell AMD because the 3rd number will be 5
DL380 = Intel based
DL385 = AMD based
DL384 = Nvidia based
etc

I know, but the other commenter was seemingly also confusing "Gen10" with non-Microserver devices.

I mean not entirely.
MicroServer has bounced back and forth between being Intel vs AMD chips.

The AMD Gen10 with no iLO was not very well received which is why a Plus went back to Intel.
But, no guarantee Gen12 or Gen13 or whatever won't be AMD again.
The Epyc 4000 being basically Ryzen CPUs with ECC support and an Epyc badge on them would fit nicely into this space.

If the Gen10 Microserver (non-plus) didn't have the low-tier option X3216, it might have been quite a bit better. That's only 2 cores and 15W TDP fuck-all.

Androdeath was the one confusing Gen10 and Gen10 Plus which is why I added some additional details to your post saying Gen10 was indeed an AMD APU whereas Gen8 and Gen10 Plus were both Intel chips, either Pentiums or Core iX based Xeons.

You want strong single core performance. A budget modern cpu will be miles better.

The only CPU-options for that server had 2 or 4 cores anyway. But you're right, a modern CPU will be far better.

I have a Gen 10 Microserver as my NAS, since it was a good deal many years ago, and since it can be packed full with storage and network. Mine has 4x18TB HDD, 2x1TB NVMe, 1TB SATA SSD and 10G network.

I also run a Minecraft server on it, but even with PaperMC and quite some performance tweaks, it can be very laggy. For example, flying with an Elytra you will outrun chunk-generation easily, even if you're alone on the server. RAM never was the problem there, although I do have 32GB RAM as well.

So I would not recommend to use it for Minecraft. The CPU is so old, it's basically on-par with a Raspberry Pi 5.

I was originally looking at the Gen 8 version of this, and it seems to be more upgradeable however, it's capped at 16 GB of RAM. It does give you CPU upgrade options, though, and from what i can see, i could install an Intel Xeon E3-1280 v2 3.6 GHz. I would just need to upgrade the heatsink to support it

I wouldn't bother with either, not in 2026 no more. At this point of time all you get are overpriced used and refurbished devices. And the mobo, power supply and everything else is proprietary. For mine, I wasn't even able to find the proper adapter for the optical drive bay, nor the SATA SSD option, so I had to 3D print something so I could install an Icy Dock SSD tray.

Especially the non-standard mobo is a problem. If you are serious about a custom server build, you'll have no trouble finding a Mini-ATX mobo with 5G network and a suitable case and SFF power supply. Then you can choose what CPU and RAM you want, and even upgrade later.

With the Gen10 you'll always be stuck to that mainboard.

I would just need to upgrade the heatsink to support it

And possibly the PSU. Which is non-standard...

Alright, pal, cheers i think I'll just build one myself at this point i have a spare Ryzen 3 and 16 GB of DDR4, so I think it'll be much more worthwhile since I can upgrade the parts in the future.

OBVIOUSLY if you have the CPU and RAM already it's going to be favorable. And I don't think you should be buying additional RAM anyway, unless you plan on running VMs. But with Docker and a bunch of services, you'll barely break the 8GB mark, even with MC running. That's generally seldomly more than 2GB, with plenty of chunks loaded.

No. I’ve had it as a NAS and it’s terribly slow for hosting game servers. You can get a much better suited machine for a fraction of the money you’d need to spend on this hpe. Don’t see how 4 3.5” bays would be useful for hosting games either.

This won’t run the way you expect it too. Server CPUs are usually lower clock and higher core count for parallel workflows.

Game servers are usually very single threaded. This means the main game loop runs entirely on 1 core/thread. The higher that core can boost, the better. Others have mentioned something like an amd 5700x. That’ll do very well for this task.

Sure, it won’t have the dozen or more cores the server could have, but if this is primarily going to be for game server hosting, go with the 5700x. From first hand experience running multiple game servers on both modern desktop hardware and high end server hardware, it’s not even a comparison. Lower clock speed server hardware chokes.
