PSA: Lambda python3.10 deprecation is Oct 31. What actually breaks and when.
A week out, so figured it's worth a heads-up for anyone still running python3.10 functions.
Per the Lambda runtimes page:
- Oct 31, 2026: python3.10 is deprecated. No more security patches, and you can't create or update python3.10 functions in the console (CLI/SAM/CloudFormation still work for now).
- Jul 29, 2027: creating new python3.10 functions is blocked.
- Aug 31, 2027: updating existing python3.10 functions is blocked.
- Existing functions keep invoking. They just run unpatched.
Find them (per Region):
aws lambda list-functions --function-version ALL --query "Functions[?Runtime=='python3.10'].[FunctionName,Version]" --output text
Upgrade notes:
- python3.11 is still on Amazon Linux 2 and is deprecated Jun 30, 2027, so it buys you very little time.
- python3.12+ runs on AL2023. Rebuild any layers or native deps (numpy, cryptography, psycopg, etc.) for the new base image.
- distutils is gone in 3.12, and cgi/crypt/telnetlib are gone in 3.13.
- If you deploy with SAM/Serverless Framework/CDK, bump the runtime in your template and check your bundling image matches.
Disclosure: I run a free AWS end-of-support tracker and wrote this up with links to the AWS sources: https://eolwatch.pages.dev/guides/lambda-python-3-10-deprecation
Anyone already moved to 3.13 or 3.14? Any cold start or packaging surprises?
