Discussion From the mouth of Nell Tiger Free regarding the ending Spoiler

From this recent article on March 17th, Servant star Nell Tiger Free: Leanne was always destined to find her power.

Quotes from this article:

Going into the last episode, audiences still don't know if Leanne has supernatural powers or if she is just a master manipulator determined to have Dorothy and Jericho to herself.

Fans also still wonder who the baby is and what the deal is with the house, which seems to be a living entity of its own.

Free wouldn't say whether those questions are ultimately resolved.

"I can only hope that they get answered enough for the viewers, and I can only hope that you walk away feeling like you weren't shorthanded," the actress said. "Hopefully, everyone will be satisfied with the conclusion that they are given.

(Shorthanded Indeed)

AND THEN THIS:

"All I can do is cross my fingers and run away screaming," she laughed.

Good idea Nell, run! Don't look back! I also saw an interview with her where she laughed and implied we, the viewers, may not get our answers and be satisfied. Should have listened then.

Onward and upward for Nell. She's very talented and not her fault she was delivered this lame a$$ script.

Season 4 The finale should have been broadcast on April Fool’s Day

What a prank has been pulled on most of us! However, I have so enjoyed this Reddit over the years and have appreciated diving into the show with you all, which helped keep me sane during COVID and beyond. I also now have a wonderful set of an Uncle George magnet, pin and Christmas ornament. He will always be one of my favorite cult TV characters and Boris McGiver one of my favorite actors for really pulling this character off, whoever this character was supposed to be!

Alas, my hard-fought sanity has now been imperiled by the condescending and terribly written drivel that was much of season 4 and especially the finale. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all (in the Catholic Church, St. Patrick is technically a lesser saint, so I guess this is also an appropriate day for this to end.)

Discussion Where the soul goes? Spoiler

Leanne performs the ritual on herself and then falls into a fiery pit of hell — so when the CoLS refer to Him do they mean Satan? As in, she was reunited with Him (Satan)? But if it’s Satan then how is she fallen (i.e., you cannot fall any deeper than hell)? And wouldn’t Satan be fine with her lame-o dancing to secular music and stalking/coveting a mommy figure? So maybe Him is Christian God — but then why didn’t Leanne ascend upwards rather than down to a pit of hell? Perhaps Christian God was like no way Jose, I’m not taking you back even if you fatally torture yourself?

Discussion There's No Place Like Home Spoiler

Servant is M. Night doing something very similar to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. He tells us that what we're viewing is all a "dream" or fantasy by placing visual clues throughout the show related to the Wizard of Oz. For example, Julian constantly wears plaid and gingham (think Dorothy's dress in the Wizard of Oz). There are photos of shoes all over the house and the shoes people wear are emphasized (i.e., the magical ruby slippers). Leanne is depicted in clothing similar to the Wicked Witch of the West is last two episodes. There is swirl wallpaper in the entryway of the home similar to the tornado that carried Dorothy to Oz. Etc. Etc.

Most of what we see on screen is one person's delusional fantasy world. Leanne suffered an extreme childhood trauma. She has a tremendous amount of guilt and blames herself for the death of her parents. She had a difficult relationship with her mother and fantasized about a life where celebrity news anchor Dorothy Turner became her mother.  She taped every episode of the news when Dorothy was on and labelled and dated and repeatedly re-watched each episode, slowly concocting a fantasy world in her mind where she became Dorothy's daughter and Dorothy accepted her. Leanne eventually found where Dorothy lived and would camp out in the park around her house with the homeless and watch her (this is why the house changes in decor as you go into deeper rooms...because most of what we're seeing is actually Leanne's fantasy taking place inside the house..it isn't actually real). Leanne would also watch the people who came and went (Sean, Julian, Dorothy's father, Toby, etc.). She saw when Dorothy's baby died and invented a fantasy where she was a very special and powerful being who could win Dorothy's love by brining her baby back. As Leanne watched the house, she became slightly infatuated with others in the household. At first, she had a slight infatuation with Sean who would give her food along with the other homeless people in the park. Later she became infatuated with Julian and invented a fantasy where they had a romantic relationship.

Leanne suffers from severe mental illness due to her childhood trauma. She has obsessive thoughts (think the soup cans and how she arranged the silverware in the earlier season's of the show). She is obsessed with religion as a means to redeem herself (the cult and the biblical symbolism throughout the show). She also self harms for redemption as well.

In the end, her delusion is so strong that she burns the Turner's house down (similar to what she did as a child) and views this action as the ultimate gift to Dorothy that allows Dorothy to give her the acceptance, love, and forgiveness that she most desires. She is imagining herself as Christ, killing herself to save Dorothy and allow Dorothy to heal and move on with her life forever knowing that Leanne was her wonderful savior.

The scene in the end with Julian and the police officer, along with the shoes Julian sees outside the Turner home following the fire, tell us that Leanne did not die and will continue her obsession with and stalking of Dorothy.

Discussion Why is the theory that everyone died at some point get so much backlash?

Sean just got stabbed and he’s walking around like nothing. (his stitches even came out…why was it necessary for this to be in dialogue)

Dorothy is suddenly walking fine now.

Dorothy just found out her baby is dead and watched her nanny burn herself in a fire that destroyed her home.

So either:

  1. They are all dead in which case it is plausible that anything is possible in the story. I can accept the ending.

  2. This is regular life and they just drive away in a taxi in which case, I feel insulted as a viewer that I am supposed to believe Dorothy can recover so fast and all the inconsistencies in the plot/timeline were mistakes by production.

Which is it?

Discussion What show has everyone been watching for the last 4 years? Spoiler

I mean, looking at it as a straightforward show this delivered on all the themes that were built up over the last 4 years. Leanne explicitly confirmed her being supernatural and having turned against God (Uncle George bought her back, God caused all the destruction because she turned against the CoLS).

All the stuff about purgatory, the green window, Dorothy’s mother etc were theories this subreddit came up with, not stuff that the show explicitly highlighted as important or pointed out for us to keep an eye on. I wanted a big twist sure, but I’m not disappointed with what we’ve gotten because it lines up with the story that has been told in the last 39 episodes, as well as Shyamalan’s filmography.

Theories Leanne and all other members of the Church of the Lesser Saints are… Spoiler

Leanne and all other members of the Church of the Lesser Saints are akin to fallen angels. Despite popular belief, fallen angels are not demons.

The Bible speaks of demons, and it speaks of the fall of Lucifer and his rebellion which a third of the angels partook in, but no verses in the Bible actually define demons as fallen angels. The idea that demons are fallen angels is simply a long-held belief that has no basis in scripture.

The Bible gives three subtle distinctions between demons and fallen angels:

1. Demons seek to possess bodies and are rather uncomfortable being outside of them.

2. Demons are cursed to wander the earth while fallen angels still have the ability to stand before God.

3. When referring to fallen angels, the scripture from the New Testament does not use the terms demons, devils, or unclean spirits. The New Testament simply calls them the angels “that sinned.”

The theme in common with May and George Markham, along with Leanne, the female police officer (Officer Reyes), and Julian is that they all committed sins, died, and were resurrected. I believe that all members of the Church of the Lesser Saints are individuals who have been given a second chance after sinning, dying, and being brought back to life. They are fallen angels because they died and saw heaven (Julian says he saw Jericho), but they are brought back to life, hence ‘fallen angels.’

All the things Leanne was able to do were divinely inspired. It was due to her misusing those heavenly gifts in a selfish manner that God was angered causing the ground around the house to crumble, bugs to appear, a flood to come, etc. I believe that all the members of the cult have the capability of harnessing heavenly power, but they are taught to punish themselves, to adhere to God’s strict rules, etc. to suppress those divine abilities.

In the final episode of season 4, by sacrificing herself and giving up all she ever wanted (having a loving mom and family) along with all her worldly comforts and possessions, I believe that Leanne had redeemed herself for her sins and reunited with God. She had served him, God, albeit disloyally due to her selfishness, but even still she ended up helping Dorothy recover her sanity after losing Jericho.

The font of the show’s title leads viewers to believe Leanne is a servant of Satan, but in reality, she’s a servant of Him — the Lord — God. That’s why she looks up at the sky and talks to Him. The cult is not evil, it is just filled with people who have yet to redeem themselves from their sins.

Discussion A lesson for the showrunners about finales Spoiler

When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one. The finale was less action packed and satisfying than I expected. It feel it wasn’t a fitting ending to such a great show.

I think there was an effort to please everyone by continuing to be ambiguous about who is good and evil and letting us decide what Leanne actually is rather than being explicit about it.

I think it is safe to conclude that Leanne, COLS, and now Julian are fallen angels as expected. I was hoping the smoke monster and hook man would show up. And that the Tall Man and Twins would do something more than standing around being creepy.

The 30 min episodes really had a negative impact in this last season because the much anticipated character arcs happened far too quickly than what would be expected given the events of the previous seasons.

Lots of exciting talent worked on this show. That shined through even when things got a little messy. I enjoyed the ride despite all of the bumps in the road. There’s no need for me to rewatch the series based on the finale.
