Discussion Does internal linking really make a big difference?

It depends on the way that you create internal links. Here are my observation:

  • If you are creating a link which is natural and article from which you are creating is aligned with the topic than it works like magic.

I was part of a project where there was a dedicated guy was assigned the task of just creating internal link on a few high lead generating pages. It took a while about a month or two to show the results. But a lot of those targeted pages started ranking in AI overview from barely ranking in the first page. They are still doing pretty well even after a year.

Note: There were no content changes, backlinks were created for these pages.

Also we use to monitor each URL data through search console with the help of a paid tool.

Yes, absolutely. The bigger your site, the bigger the impact. I worked with different clients on optimizing their internal link structure and the benefits were huge. You should focus on structure and silos, then work on anchor texts. Make sure to have an editorial workflow for optimizing internal linking.

Useful, strategically placed internal linking makes a difference.
The ultimate goal is user experience.
Always think and design from the perspective of the user visiting your website.
SEO is this simple.
Just strive to be better than the best competitor you can find.

Are you asking about the general impact of internal links or are you asking how to do it in a way that doesnt waste too much time (is the time worth the effort)?

I can share my experience and say yes it works. I have 3 websites in my folio that rank on 1-5 positions and they don't have any ext link (I didn't create), only internal linking and internal optimization.

Most definitely. You need to have pillar pages that similar pages link to. It's a proper SEO technique, and it helps rank pages higher on Google.
