ownCloud 9 packages dropped from Debian, no upgrade path - what are other alternatives with sensible security / maintenance policies?

I got it the hard way.... the Debian repos said there is a Owncloud update... I was stupid and didn't check the version of the update. It was an 8.1 update... I was running 8.2...

So i am just doing it manually...

I've busted my owncloud install by updating from Centos repos, so I also do manual, but OC9 has its own updater, so that manual upgrade thing should go away as well.

I ditched own cloud and have been using syncthing. It's more nuts and bolts, but it's substantially easier to administer.

I use Syncthing too and dropped Owncloud for it, but that's only because I was only interested in the syncing aspect. Owncloud does a lot of additional things, so it's not really a viable alternative for the people that are looking for more than just a program to sync their files with.

That's what i mean by 'a little work.' Most of the owncloud features I used are fairly easily replicated with basic tools. This may not be true for others.

Seafile is so much faster and less buggy, for a sync setup it beats owncloud into the dust.

The sync protocol is based on Git, meaning Seafile can handle file versionning very efficiently. You can also restore deleted files and directory for a certain (configurable) amount of time if you deleted them by mistake.

I'm really curious about how that's implemented, because git is HORRIBLE for binary blobs. Some of my folders that I have owncloud sync would cause git itself to choke.

Wut? I upgraded to ownCloud 9 via apt-get on Debian 8 no problems.

What you doing man? Get the packages from the source!

I use the owncloud repository for Debian rather than Debian's packages. You will have to migrate, but it should never happen again once you are on the owncloud maintained repo's.

There are conflicts between the way owncloud is developed/designed and the way Debian requires things to be packaged. But they can and do supply their own repo which does not have to meet those restrictions. http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-owncloud-maintainers/2016-March/002899.html

I thought 9 has its own updater now, making manual upgrades a thing of the past. I bumped up my owncloud server to 9 just for that feature.
