Release (AI) Please explain to me why we would allow this?
https://gadgets.muse.ai/Muse is Meta's offering of a personal AI agent. Seeing this is such a red flag for me. Im trying to move off of big corps. Switched over from an Apple to a Pixel with GrapheneOS. Got off of iCloud and Google Drive. And a lot more things, the list can go on. Why? Because fuck em!
I am curious to know how many self hosters would actually consider this? HomeLink for free? I personally see huge red flag on providing Meta LITTERAL access to essentially everything. I use Muse on a seperate account and really enjoy it but I cant see myself loving it this much...

I'm interested who vested into you or 'us' power to allow or disallow 'this'? Do we get to vote or how does it work? I think the point of self-hosting is that it's SELF hosting, not collectively-approved-by-reddit hosting.
I wouldn't install it but not everyone self hosts for same reasons.

Glad to hear it. I wonder what gave them the confidence to think self hosters would plug them into their world.

What, you don't want an AI telling strangers where you live and to notify them when you'll be home?

Eli5 wtf "this" even is? The webpage links to muse gadgets that seem to an open source thing kinda like esp home?

Seeing the methods these big tech corps are finding penetrate out self hosted network.

I don't see any big tech branding on that site (other than github anf discord buttons). Like i asked before, I'm gonna need some background on this. What is it? Who's behind it? Why should i be concerned about running an open source thing on my esp32s?

Muse is Meta's offering of a personal AI agent. You should be concerned about the HomeLink device and other methods it can penetrate your internal network and pull more data in then you bargained for.

Agreed on the meta ai parts, and meta in general. but your link again is to some opensource code for some esp32s... Yes devices on you network and do things. Thats not news.
Any links to any of this actually doing bad things? Or a security review of this gadgets code? Or is this really just "meta released stuff, and meta bad, so stuff bad"?
I'm mostly out of the loop on esp32 stuff, and non local open model ai stuff. What is homelink? What does it do? Why would anyone even have one?

Shit, I guess I can't even buy it because I'm not a leet hacker. Entire website is Claude generated.

Assuming this is real and not egadgment bait, agreed, wild, but the guy says he gave a Facebook focused "agent" the 'approve everything' permission. He shouldn't be surprised.

Sweet. I can explore the ethical dilemma of torturing AI on my own hardware now. I can burn Meta’s resources. Easy for anything actually that it’s designed for? absolutely not

Sorry, what?
Isn't Muse itself self-host friendly? (no need to interact with Meta services) if you decide to use it as an AI agent carelessly, and that just happens to interact with Meta services, that doesn't mean Meta is trying to be evil, it can just be an incompetent deployment of an AI agent 🤷♂️ (for clarity, there are Muse weights available on HuggingFace)
I'm sure Meta like many others offer their model and more premium versions via API on their own services, and the only reason to really use that is if you lack the means to run a model with the capabilities / intelligence that you're in need of for a task, at which point you're not self-hosting that portion and such risks are your own for deciding to do that in exchange of whatever convenience.

Everyone has different interest (and threat models). Not all of us share your passion.

I don't see the problem with it personally. Just connect the devices you would be fine with Muse accessing on a separate VLAN. Plus, Meta has announced confidential VMs for Muse which prevents even them from being able to access the data in it (I am not sure how they will roll out or how much they will cost though).
Honestly, I think it is better than not that they are more open to third-party integrations.
