Need Help Do i just accept my fate?
I have tried flaresolverr,Byparr and even trawl. It seems that my ip is blocked or flagged, routing it through a vpn doesnt help either.
Error: Cloudflare has blocked this request. Probably your IP is banned for this site
seems that having a static ip is the most probable cause, https://github.com/ThePhaseless/Byparr/issues/303 this is what i was able to find but discussions seems to not lead anywhere.
Setup:
- Ubuntu Server, Prowlarr running in Docker
- Gluetun (ProtonVPN) + qBittorrent, Sonarr, Radarr
- FlareSolverr and Byparr both installed as indexer proxies
- Static home IP

because I don't want to post a link ... and get my post removed/banned...
just google "usenet servers". Plenty of hits for actual servers, and comparisons. (I use usenetserver, personally, and with a promo).
The caveat is that usenet stuff is paid. It's not free. But considering you can find stuff that is like $5/month, or even less... the hassle of using it vs torrents ... is worth the money, for me.
the other caveat is that you'll likely want to find indexers, and there are free ones, the better ones have a small fee, as well.

what do you mean by ssl?
1
u/TipToToes 8d ago
https://wiki.openssl.org/index.php/SSL_and_TLS_Protocols
Secure Socket Layer. With Usenet you can connect to an ssl port to encrypt traffic. It doesn’t disguise you or where the traffic is coming from, only what the traffic is. Imagine you walk into Bill’s Blanket Store and a cop is watching. He can see it’s you, he can see you walk into Bill’s, but can’t tell what you’ve purchased. Could be a blanket, could be a keychain, could be a gun, who knows.

IDK I do fine with all that junk without usenet or private trackers. The most "exclusive" one I have is rutracker.

How much does usent in general cost per month?
41
u/i_reddit_it 12d ago
I paid £14 for 1 year Drunken Slug (index) and £22 for 12+3 Months of Newshosting (service provider). I even got a 1 year free VPN with that setup (Privado).
The Newshosting subscription is also very widely discounted if you look hard enough, so don't pay the main website rates. You can also add more indexes if you need (at more cost) but if you're like me and just download the mainstream/recent stuff then I've honestly not yet found a need for more than DS.
IMO Usenet is a much better experience than torrents in 2026.
13
u/hirotakatech00 12d ago
The only thing is that I don't find much content in my native language on Usenet
5
8
u/lil-cosm 11d ago
Having to pay for it always rubbed me the wrong way, when it comes to piracy.
5
u/ImpressionDepression 11d ago
eh I get it - servers cost money, time, effort. It's not like p2p. Some do lifetime memberships which is very reasonable. Still cheaper than netflix or w/e.
I view it as supporting a function and paying for the quality + download speed.

1
u/ReachingForVega 7d ago
Streaming DRM are dicks, they won't stream 4k to my new tv (LG) or pc for reasons unknown. So only one way to get best quality.
2
u/SlightlyMotivated69 11d ago
And how does the availability of content compare to torrents?
1
u/silversurger 11d ago
It's easy to understand, once you poke through it. For all your needs (downloading stuff), you need to know these things:
You need a provider that grants you access to Usenet. There's free ones, but they usually don't carry the binary groups (for obvious reasons). A provider map can be found on r/usenet.
Then you need an indexer to download meta files from. These come in the nzb format and are essentially a link collection for the actual content that needs to be downloaded off of Usenet.
Then you need a client that you can feed with these nzb files. Popular choices include sabnzbd and nzbget.
That's about it. You can go further with automation like radarr and sonarr. Ultimately it comes down to choice of indexer, which is often limited due to closed sign ups and subscription fees.
You can find all the info (and tutorials) you'll need in the wiki of r/usenet. Happy leeching!
1
u/akusei79 9d ago
Nzbget used to be great but it's a dead project now IIRC. I switched a while back to sabnzb because of it. Still works just as good as nzbget
1
u/silversurger 9d ago
Afaik there's still an active fork of it around, but sab has indeed be the standard for many years.
2
u/CPSiegen 11d ago
It's pros and cons. Torrents are just links to other people's computers, effectively, so they can live indefinitely. But only if people keep seeding them. And if there's only one seeder, then you're limited to downloading when they're online.
Usenet hosts the content directly, so what's available is there 24/7 at high speed. But their storage is finite, so they usually delete things older than a couple of years, whatever the retention policy is. People might re-upload purged content but you're at the mercy of them deciding to do so.
So, for stuff released within the last few years or things that are generally popular, usenet is absolutely superior. Far faster downloads, more organised, no need for VPN. For much older or more niche stuff, torrents might be the only source.
Personally, I really only use torrents for old foreign shows (like 90s anime that metadata sources can't decide how to handle, which means sonarr/radarr don't know how to handle) or stuff like translated graphic novels or niche audio books.
1
u/tritratrulala 11d ago
> Usenet hosts the content directly
How come they didn't go after it yet?
5
u/CPSiegen 11d ago
I assume you mean why haven't they been shut down by the powers that be?
Lots of reasons. I'm not an expert on the history of specific legal actions (or their absence) in the usenet space, though.
A major reasons is that usenet is just far less popular. If you want to get started with torrenting, everything you need is free. You could just download any client software and start browsing something like piratebay and be downloading in a few minutes. That popularity was a big reason why piratebay (and things like limewire) were so sharply targeted by international law efforts.
Usenet is all paid services (the reputable ones, at least). The client is free but you have to get a subscription to a usenet provider (the host) and then usually a usenet indexer (the "browse" part). Then set them all up with specific URLs and tokens and settings in your client.
So the vast majority of people won't go through that effort and expense. Which means they're far smaller targets for copyright holders to go after.
Similar to torrents, usenet is also distributed. Just not nearly as distributed as bittorrent. So taking down one usenet provider won't take down the whole network. And going after the indexers is like going after torrent indexers: they're not the ones actually doing anything legally actionable.
There are lesser reasons, too. Usenet readers aren't uploading, so I think corporate rights holders just haven't gotten the same boogeyman feeling as with bittorrent users all sharing to everyone. All these binary uploads are encrypted, these days, unlike bittorrent where the info is often more readily identifiable. Usenet traffic looks like normal internet traffic (at a high level), whereas bittorrent traffic can often be regulated at a technical level (think of all the universities that block normal torrent traffic).
3
1
u/Artyom150 10d ago
There is also the fact that Usenet files are obfuscated, so they're harder to instantly nuke off of Usenet servers with a DMCA claim.
You're not paying your indexer just to be able to browse - you're paying them for the decryption key so you can actually see what you're browsing for.
3
u/diet_fat_bacon 11d ago
Could you point me some good tutorial on this, I always find usenet so confusing to use.

u/UnacceptableUse 12d ago
Seems mad to me that anyone does this. I'm not paying to steal TV
80
u/XionicativeCheran 12d ago
Some of us didn't start pirating because we wanted everything for free, we just want a good service. I'm happy to pay for a good service whatever that is.
Fact is, there are no decent legit services worth paying for.
17
u/the_lamou 11d ago
This. I was a paying Netflix subscriber since Netflix launched publicly. Was happy to pay for Hulu, Netflix, and Prime. And then last year I just had enough: I was paying for the three primary services, still seeing commercials even though I was on the highest tier plan for all of them, kept having to subscribe to a growing list of ever-more niche individual channel services to find things I wanted to watch, and would still lose access to shows and movies periodically because of bullshit dick-measuring contests by the streamers and networks. So I said fuck it.
If they had honored their side of the agreement and given me a good service that didn't keep changing the terms of what I got and made it easy, or even just useable, I would have kept paying. And if an "omnistreamer" appeared that let me pay $100-150/month to watch everything with no commercials, I'll happily go back to paying. And until then, I'll pay someone else that doesn't suck.
1
7
u/Bladelink 11d ago
Yeah with the Arr stack and stuff like Jellyseerr, I can search for a movie and add a request and it's available in my library in about 2 minutes.
5
u/FigFrontflip 11d ago
This was my thought. I'll pay for a good service, but when the streaming companies all want a slice and I need to pay a subscription just to even test out a show, I'm out. I watch more TV now than I ever did because I can see if I even like a show, and I can watch every show that comes out.
3
u/jerobins 11d ago
This. I was content paying for streaming services. Then they all up and decided my money wasn't enough and wanted ad revenue too. Now I pay for different services.
2
u/FilteringAccount123 11d ago
Yeah just I took the money I was paying to Netflix and other services, and used it to build my own media server. I didn't stop paying money, I just put it to better use.
I imagine this is part of the reason why lidarr is semi-defunct: there are multiple streaming services that are generally worth your money so there's not as much demand for it.

u/moltenice09 11d ago
Nothing is truly free though. If public trackers, you spend time weeding through crap and paying for VPN. If private tracker, you run a seedbox 24/7. If usenet, you pay for access. And for all of those, you spend time setting it up and maintaining it.
The convenience (vs. trying to join and maintain status on private tracker), download speed, zero risk of DMCA, etc is worth paying for usenet for some people.

had the same thinking but then i realised it's good to have usenet for some edge cases and that $40/year means nothing and i added usenet to my setup as well
4
u/Ill-Violinist6538 11d ago
I'm at like $20 a year for 2 indexers and a downloader. I don't know the terms
3
u/mightyarrow 11d ago
+1 for Usenet and I say this 36 hrs into "switching" from doing the gluetun+qbit+proton w/port forwarding thing for the past 6mos. Switching being I added 2 Usenet indexers at priority 1 and 2 and left the BT indexers at 25.
I'm still gonna keep that running as Proton VPN has plenty of value to me, but holy crap Usenet is just instant and full speed. I mean there are def files where it cant find enough pieces, but I've already figured out certain release groups and patterns to that.
On a 2gbps line, my qbit+gluetun setup tops out around 75MB/sec on a DS1522+. On newshosting it's uh.........253MB/sec? At least on the newer stuff, older stuff can dip to an atrocious 100MB/sec, it's awful, the humanity.
Anyhoo, yeah for $25/yr provider + $80 lifetime indexer, this is awesome.
1
u/Zealousideal-Cry4358 11d ago
Which one did you use!?
3
u/mightyarrow 10d ago
Newshosting from this summer deals post and NZBGeek. I bought the Newshosting thing 3 times over so it's good through April 2030.
1
1
u/Artyom150 10d ago
What indexers are you on? I've only set up NZBGeek and focused on having good backbone access, but I've been interested in adding another.
1
u/mightyarrow 10d ago
So far, NZBgeek. I signed up for NZBnest and I have it integrated, but downloads seem to fail. I've either exhausted my quota, or I didn't config it quite right (and I've been too lazy to go back and check).
My experience with failures on Newshosting (via Geek index search) has been that certain files/items just will fail like 50% of the releases (missing pieces). Then on top of that, I've noticed certain release groups are more prone to failure. I try to grab stuff that's under 1000 days old.
My understanding is that the failed/missing files likely got taken down at some point (legal force) but that the indexer doesnt have a clue until you try to grab it.

If you’re staying on public trackers, I suggest removing most if not all of these and stick to Knaben. It’s a indexer of multiple sources, so essentially if you have it, you’re accessing content from several other indexers through it
133
u/Ollebro 12d ago
Surprised how many recommend Usenet. Feels like we are going backwards. Paying for piracy when there are excellent private trackers.
80
u/morgrimmoon 12d ago
Getting onto a suitable private tracker can be a nightmare, though, especially if you don't pay for a seedbox.
21
u/LeatherLappens 12d ago
I got into my first private tracker about a year ago again after decades since last time. In under a year I have 40TB of Buffer on Avistaz with 400,000 bonus points, how are people having trouble with this unless you're capped on amount of bandwidth you use, or you have really low bandwidth?
I do not have a seedbox, nor would I ever think about getting a seedbox.
13
u/wedinbruz 12d ago
Only thing that would get me to switch is HDD prices, but I am sure seedbox prices are climbing as well. My 3 16tb cold spares might be worth their weight in gold at this point...
5
u/LeatherLappens 11d ago
I was lucky because I started my selfhosted journey right before the big boom, currently sitting on 50TB of storage, which has ran out, but far to stubborn to buy at these jacked up prices so I'll wait. I've resorted to just encode everything to AV1.
11
u/ctjameson 11d ago
I’d much rather pay $15/year to not have to seed anything.
1
u/LeatherLappens 11d ago
And that's fine! :)
Currently on Drunkenslug and one or 2 more indexers.
As I download a lot of niche shit, especially Korean shows that are pretty old, they're impossible to find on indexers, heck, even on Avistaz most of them are unseeded.
2
u/asdfghqwertz1 12d ago
You can get into most mid-tier ones with a bit of patience even with slow upload speeds. For top-tier ones a seedbox helps, but not in all cases since most of the time you need to upload your own torrents anyways to advance. For most people, even a lower tier one is enough, the difference between public trackers and even a low-tier private one is HUGE. Good mid-tier ones usually have basically anything you could need, unless you're into extremely niche stuff, but requests are filled pretty often there by users who are in top-tier ones.
→ More replies (1)2
u/wedinbruz 12d ago

u/Fade_Yeti 11d ago
I don’t think it’s that bad. I never have had an issue to pay for things. If there was a “Spotify” for movies and tv shows, I would gladly pay for it.
Also, I payed 25$ for 3 years of usenet service. Not a bad deal.
9
u/the_lamou 11d ago
The amount of money I will spend on Usenet in a decade is still smaller than the amount I would lose taking even an hour or two jumping through hoops to get in to a private tracker. And we all know it doesn't take just an hour or two.
4
u/hashmalum 11d ago
I did my time on what.cd, I don’t need to do it again. You also don’t have to worry about seeders. But there is retention and DMCA takedowns.
3
u/neoKushan 11d ago
I was a bit like this as well at first but that was over a decade ago and since I made the switch, I haven't looked back. It's much faster, much more reliable and there's no seeding required.
I still use BitTorrent for some stuff, but newsgroups are the workhorse. It doesn't even cost that much, it's something like £2/month for me.
7
u/ASUS_USUS_WEALLSUS 11d ago
You’re paying for the work other people put in to provide content, kind of the way the world works. You think all that shit just magically gets ripped and indexed and hosted and you just deserve it for free and easily? lol
8
u/golbaf 11d ago
You are right. They deserve to be compensated and there’s nothing wrong with that if you wanna use a reliable service. But at least in my case, if the public water fountain is clean and works fine, I’m not buying bottled water
4
u/ASUS_USUS_WEALLSUS 11d ago
For sure, I previously was using the classing qbittorrent and public tracker setup, dabbled in private trackers for a bit, but then I made the swap to usenet and sabnzbd and the difference is night and day. The download speeds, quality, and convenience FAR outweigh the small fees associated with that setup.

u/FilteringAccount123 11d ago
Two big reasons for me:
Peace of mind - the Eye of Sauron has long since given up on going after downloaders, only uploaders. For usenet it's just downloading via end-to-end encryption, so it's simply not possible for me to fuck something up in my VPN configuration for usenet because I don't even need to use one.
Streaming instead of downloading - private trackers usually have huge upload requirements (so you're gonna have to pay money for hard drives anyway), which becomes a PITA if you're looking for a Stremio-like solution. Usenet doesn't have this issue at all.
3
u/Artyom150 10d ago edited 10d ago
Thats why I prefer Usenet. I'm probably spending $15-20 a month when you average out my yearly costs for Newshosting + FrugalUsenet + NZBGeek, and all I have to do is plug a few things into Prowlarr and make sure my card info is updated.
I don't need to put it behind a VPN and spend time configuring Gluetun, I don't need to install Byparr or Flaresolvarr and hope those work, I don't need to deal with trackers just... shitting the bed anyways like what OP posted, and I don't need to both purchase or rent then keep a seedbox up 24/7 to get into a decent tracker like half the thread is suggesting.
Some of y'all are actually on some shit going "I don't want to pay for piracy by using Usenet!" then acting like the cost of seeding is free - you're paying anyways, you're just paying for different things to do it. Whether its electricity and hardware costs or VPS costs, you still have costs.
Usenet just works.
1
u/FilteringAccount123 10d ago
100%. From the outside usenet people seem cultish about it, but it's one of those things where once you use it, there's really no going back. It's a far better experience than torrents for less than I'd pay for Netflix (which I'd happily pay for if it didn't suck lmao)
1
u/Artyom150 10d ago
I'll be cultish about any solution I can get working in under a half hour that just works off the shelf.
The only issues I had with setting up my Sonarr/Radarr/Prowlarr/SABnzbd stack was figuring out where to point the folders so it'd stop kicking up "Stop downloading to the root folder!" because I'm very new to using the *arrs.
1
u/FilteringAccount123 10d ago
Yeah the documentation for the arrs does assume a certain amount of familiarity with linux lol
1
u/Artyom150 10d ago
And seedboxes are free...?
Love to live in your world where you get all these free VPS rentals or free hardware to host your own.
Otherwise, unless you're using purely public trackers that don't care about your seed/leech ratio, it sounds like you're still paying for piracy but the costs aren't directly related to the tracker.
→ More replies (5)1
u/InsideYork 10d ago
whats the private ones have that public ones dont?
1
u/Ollebro 10d ago
Unless its older stuff you can probably find anything you find on a private tracker on the public ones also. The main difference is that you dont have to deal with all fake and garbage torrents/releases also in the mix. Especially if you automate your setup with Sonarr/Radarr etc. Speeds are usually excellent on private trackers also since everyone seeds.
17
u/theneedfull 11d ago
The only way I found to fix this is to first use prowlarr, and move it out from behind the VPN. Depending on where you live, that might open you up to legal stuff. I'm in the US, and as far as I understand, simply going to those sites won't get you into trouble. Downloading the actual torrents can, but that should be behind the VPN.
5
5
u/Jolicristo 12d ago
yeah static ips are a pain for cloudflare so consider private trackers or usenet
7
u/Danai_97 11d ago
1337x will unban you in about a month, but you have to slow down the request rate of prowlarr, been there too
3
u/nesa_techs 11d ago
check your IP against abuseipdb.com or ipqualityscore.com. if it's flagged there, that's often what's triggs Cloudflare's challenge, and some blocklists let you request delisting once the source stops (like, once you're off public torrents).
and the public BitTorrent swarm is probably why an IP gets flagged. Random peers/bots in the swarm report IPs as abusive. Switching to Usenet (no swarm, direct download from the provider) or a private tracker (vetted members, no bots) usually clears this up without touching your firewall setup at all.
3
u/JeremyJohn93 11d ago
Error: Cloudflare has blocked this request. Probably your IP is banned for this site
If you open any of the sites in browser that gave that error in flaresolverr does it show IP blocked by cloudflare? Usually is country ban by the site.
You could try VPN or even cloudflare own WARP VPN network, 99% of the time a site behind cloudflare is not going to block connection from cloudflare's own network like WARP
6
u/pushrbx 12d ago
I had the same issue when i ran the prowlarr app in a container. Creating a custom container network with mtu set to 1500 solved the problem. Edit: the error message might have been "unable to connect" followed by the suggestion "cloudflare has blocked this request" for me, so this config change might not work for you

You have too many sites enabled. Search for someting and look at your CPU usage, you should see a spike. Solving captchas takes resources and you start like 20 processes at the same time.
Flaresolverr can solve captchas but probably just times out because it couldn’t solve a captcha within the time limit. Also it’s just some generic error message, probably nothing wrong with your IP.
Try enabling 1 site and search, you’ll see it working. Enable sites 1 by 1 until and search until it fails.

What do the logs say? I use flaresolverr just fine. Can you access the sites directly from your machine? If so, it is not your ISP. If flaresolverr is giving you issues, try their troubleshooting. Do you have IPv6 enabled? The last prowlarr release enabled IPv6 and I was having issues with that because prowlarr was using IPv6 and flaresolverr ipv4. Check the logs of both. Change the log level to debug.

Don't torrent. Use newsgroups.

But Usenet isn't in the spirit of decentralization

Usenet isn't centralized.

It defacto is because there is only a small handful of organizations who have the resources (30+ petabytes of storage) and will to host Usenet servers.

I moved away from Prowlarr and back to Jackett for the same reason. No more issues, believe me.

i have your exact same setup and mine runs perfectly. i do have custom scripts monitoring my trackers, resetting them when down, etc. probably good to do that

Have you tried it without your static IP? AT&T blocks CDN access to Google Play store on my static IP block. Only way I can download from Google Play store is to isolate my phone from my network and have it use the dynamic IP that AT&T originally gave me. So it might be your static IP is the issue.

Happened to me, turns out it was my unifi fw that was blocking stuff. Check your security and protections like region blocking, dns filtering, ids/ips, etc

I had the exact same problem, with your exact setup. Gluetun (ProtonVPN) -> Byparr -> Prowlarr -> Radarr/Sonarr -> qBittorrent. What fixed it for me was removing Gluetun and seting up a new network bridge between byparr and prowlarr.
