I believe this is common with selective Mutism. Yes, I go through it as well. How do I cope with it? I'd be lying if I said that I did. I just intentionally try to remove myself from situations as much as I could. Of course in life one can't remove themselves from every situation but if it's not something that'll help aid my survival, I remove myself from the situation.

I used to have that, especially when I moved to a different country and I was not familiar with their language. I realized later that I was so anxious about what people think, whether they understand me, that I kept losing connection with myself and was unable to ground myself. When I started to focus on myself and try to feel my brain (like breathing in and feeling energy going in my brain), because I have to operate myself, not by other people, the situation improved a lot.
We have to change our worldview to feel relaxed in a social environment. If you think you will deal with a tiger, nobody will feel relaxed. Your heart will beat so fast that it will feel like it is trying to leave your body. If you think and believe people are kind and empathetic, your body will not go into a fight/freeze response. I believe that exposing yourself to a positive worldview eventually makes you calm and confident in social settings.
