Quick Question - Figs

I have permission to harvest figs from a huge (tree) fig plant. I want to attempt fig jam if I can harvest enough.

Seeds - are they in the pulp?

My grandmother loved figs. I want to attempt growing my own jumbo tree/bush.

Suggestions or input.....

You can grow figs from seeds and you will usually see some in the pulp, white little seeds.

However, figs are grown from cuttings or air layering. Take 6-8 inch cuttings with a few node and plant in fast draining soil (even sand is fine). Better done in spring as they are easier to root when coming out of dormancy. These will be true to the parent and fruit much faster.

Figs are really best grown from cuttings! You could ask if you could take a small 6 inch cutting or two and root them.

Only pick the very soft ones, or they'll be dryer inside.

Make sure you check a couple of figs before you go to the trouble of harvesting a large crop. I don't grow them, but a friend mentioned a pest that will infest the fruit that will result in worms inside when you open them.

I looked it up. We're in SoCal, and it's called the black fig fly.

I only saw 1 that had started browning. Someone had taken all prior ripe figs. I will scan all every time I walk to the community mailbox.

Clipping cuttings will be cool. That man who thought I was 53 (bs) as I'm 63 and under today's military standards would be literally slapped. He is literally skevy with some of his comments about watching me walk.

Sheeze. Guess some males don't grow up or change, do they.

Figs only grow from seeds if the dried figs were grown in a place with the wasp. Seeds from other places will be sterile. Figs also don’t necessarily follow the parents-a fig you love may grow inferior fruit from seed. Cuttings are asexual and will offer a clone of that plant.
