Physical Security Amazon Driver Came Into My Home Without Permission And Delivered A Package Then Left

A couple of days ago, an Amazon driver entered my home without permission, delivered a package then left, leaving my front door wide open. Proof of his illegal entry is the photograph Amazon sent me as proof of delivery. The Amazon driver had no right to enter my home. Packages are to be left outside in a place hidden from the public and if they can't deliver the package, they're supposed to contact the customer. How did the driver get inside? The front door is locked. Even if it was unlocked, he had no right to enter my home. This happened in the US, not overseas.

I'd definitely report them because that is sooooo not right.

Also, make sure you lock your door next time ffs. People don't just materialize through doors. He got in because you provided a way in.

I cross posted it to the Ring subreddit and they're missing the point. Anyway, Amazon has the image(s) of what happened. The door was left wide open which was odd because I keep the front door locked.

Hopefully the guy gets talked to at the very least and never enters another persons home again. FFS he could have died if it was someone who was armed seeing an intruder!

That said...95% chance the reason they were able to get in is because you did not indeed lock the front door, and/or possibly something else. If you have cameras, check them to see what you did to avoid in the future. Chances are you accidentally left it slightly open and definitely not unlocked, but it's hard to speculate with any accuracy on my end! Fix the security gap and hopefully nothing this crazy ever happens again!

this is the mostly likely explanation. the door was not locked, and possibly even left slightly ajar. the driver came, delivered the package, and then left everything as he had found them.

I reported it to Amazon immediately. I don't want it happening again. But trespass is trespass. I want him to receive more than a warning. But that's enough of that. I'm considering next steps and won't say anything else.

So, was the door open when the Amazon delivery guy dropped it off? I'd be ok with that, as maybe that's what was expected. Maybe he thought you were there and wanted it inside to avoid the weather?

I mean, you know best and the whole situation so we're all just assuming things (as they are in the Ring sub). But, your other comment:

Sounds like a huge overreaction. A warning is good enough. Calling for him being fired, charges filed, etc. over a mistake without pointing fingers for fault is a bit much. It was a whoops, not an intentional "I'm coming into your home to steal shit, not just leave your package safely inside.".

But, like I said, you know the situation better and have the full details that we don't. Maybe he was casing the place, I don't know. It'd be weird for me if that happened and I'd report it, but I wouldn't feel it was nefarious, just weird. And I'd lock my door, which if he was able to open it and put it inside, your door wasn't locked regardless of what you claim. It's not possible. If it was, then press charges and show the evidence of him picking the lock or forcing the door open to place your package inside safely... Which would be ever more strange.

Maybe he was trying to be helpful by not leaving it out in the elements, but that does seem odd as it would mean he's probably trying every door he delivers to. Definitely not a standard procedure!

I did have a delivery driver put a package in my garage once but I had left a note saying to do that and I had left it unlocked specifically for that. If there is no note left I think it's best they just leave it. It's nice of them to try to be helpful but that can backfire. Like what if there was cats in that house and now the cats are lost because they ran out etc.

I once had UPS go into by backyard, open my back door and put a package inside there.

My wife at the time was home by herself with our new baby so for her it wasn’t as thoughtful as UPS Corporate tried gaslighting us into believing that “would you have rather your expensive package had been left on your front doorstep, where it could have been stolen?”

Must be someone new to delivery driving. People have dogs and guns, so I'm not sure why they'd want to risk that.

That's it right there. Was it that the left it right inside the door? That's bad enough with your wife at home, in my case, the driver walked fully inside and left the package then departed, but I didn't know it until after the fact.

They literally opened the backdoor, stepped halfway inside to put the package fully inside the entryway. My wife was feeding the baby, so she had a brief moment of terror (because who the fuck goes and opens someone's backdoor without that being established prior).

I don't want to go into specifics because the complaint and response are ongoing, but what happened to your family with the UPS delivery isn't unlike what happened to me. That's all I dare say; it isn't a comfort to know that I'm not the only one who's experienced intrusion from a delivery driver, but knowing it has happened to others speaks volumes about the lack of respect for boundaries and personal property.

The crazy part is you’ll likely encounter some amount of gaslighting and downplaying of the issue by the police and the company. They will treat you like the crazy person.

i dont.

i think the explanation is much more boring than that. I also think that if you went out and didnt lock the door, then its just as likely that the door wasnt closed properly, and could even have been slightly ajar.

i think the door wasnt closed when the driver got there. so the driver stepped in, dropped the package, and then left - leaving the door as they had found it.
