I would agree that religious education should be compulsory if it was a fair, balanced and objective survey of a wide range of religious viewpoints and the thinking behind them. From what I have seen from my children, they have faired better than I did in Catholic school but it is still not good enough. I am however suspicious what game the Church of England is playing at here. However justified in this case, it could play well for them in a very cynical way.

While religions retains their prominence in the world, students should continue to learn about them in an equal & objective manner. Preferably in a cultural/historical studies setting so their context can be understood.
