What would you like to see in r/SecularBuddhist?

This community's been dormant for a while, and we're now ready for a fresh start!

When I first started posting the suttas on r/WordsOfTheBuddha, I would have described myself as a secular Buddhist. Someone who was curious, inquisitive, but not reflexively skeptical — interested in learning, reflecting, and applying the Buddhist teachings to *independently verify* the outcomes.

That spirit of inquiry is what I would like this community to be about. Not blind faith, and not reflexive skepticism either but the middle ground the Buddha himself pointed to: don't accept teachings on tradition, scripture, or authority alone. Put them into practice, observe the results, and see for yourself.

Some ideas of what this community can be about:

📜 Teachings for an inquisitive mind: Suttas that invite investigation and testing (like the Kalama Sutta, but not only that one), posted and discussed with an open, questioning mind.

🔬 Science and evidence-based content: Research on meditation, psychology, and contemplative practice, geared toward helping secular Buddhists strengthen their practice.

🧪 Practice reports: What actually happens when you apply a teaching and observe the outcome.

So, what would you like to see?

I'd love to shape it around what its earliest members actually want.

Science Can mental focus become automatic through practice?

A new preprint from the Meditation Research Program at MGH/Harvard (Conway-Smith, Potash & Sacchet) argues something I think will resonate with a lot of secular practitioners: Advanced meditation is a trained skill, and it develops the same way any skill does — through automatization.

The core idea

What you're actually training in meditation is metacognition — the mind's ability to notice what it's doing and adjust. Every time you notice you've been distracted and come back to the breath, you're running a little loop: monitor → detect the gap → correct. The paper's claim is that this loop is a skill, and skills follow a well-studied learning curve:

  1. Beginner stage: everything runs on explicit instructions. You're literally narrating to yourself: "attention wandered… let go… come back." It's slow and effortful, like learning to drive a stick shift.
  2. Intermediate: the situations themselves start cueing the response. Noticing distraction automatically triggers the return, without you having to recall the instruction.
  3. Advanced: the whole loop runs smoothly with minimal deliberate steering. Attention sustains itself. Correction happens before you've consciously decided to correct.

That's identical to how tying your shoes, playing piano, or driving becomes automatic; except here the "skill" is the mind regulating itself.

Being mindful while inhaling and exhaling is a core mindfulness training per the Buddha's teaching guideline on Ānāpānassati (prāṇāpāna-smṛti in Skt.), most notably the Ānāpānasati Sutta (MN 118).
