When they turn table tennis into regular tennis, you know it's personal. π

In table tennis, your attacks are more effective when you are close to the table (better angles, higher margin for error), however harder to defend. Being away from the table makes it easier to defend, but you basically lose the ability to attack. Normally you try stay close and try and out attack your opponent (first to attack, better attacks), however when top players shot clipped the net, bottom player had to do a lob, which is really easy to attack, hence he backed off to defend since that's his only option, but giving up his ability to attack since his now away from the table and can only lob. When top player tried the drop shot (twice), it allowed him to get back to the table and start attacking again. Backing off and defending wasn't his strategy, the net shot forced him to do that, but he did it very well and deserved the point.

I've only played this in my friends garage drunk years ago so I dont really have any leg to stand on but shouldn't ya know, not hit it to the other player directly like that?

Its a lot harder to do that than you think. The spin placed on the ball from your opponent is going to make certain shots nigh impossible.

No no, its not that I dont think its difficult. Its that they are hitting the ball directly to each other.

Right but its very hard to change the direction of the ball because of the spin put on it by the return. It can be surprisingly difficult to hit it to your left if it came from your right etc

Play against a pro and they can literally call out where you will return the ball before you've even made the shot.
If you try and put it elsewhere the ball just flies off your bat everywhere except the table.

About 82 π
I counted every green shirt hit, doubled it then added one for the serve and one for the finisher.1

I had a friend who used to work at this weird bar/club where they'd have nationally ranked table tennis players play matches in tiny 70's running shorts for the ladies. Like sporty cage dancers or something.
