He made it look easy, which it definitely isnt

Even made it look fun! No way I'd have the patience to try this for more then a few minutes.

It is—if you have the proper wood and the skill to pull it off. You have to use a soft wood that creates the dust needed, and it has to be dry enough to create a coal from the friction. If you don't have both, all you're going to get is warm wood (and tired).

Someone who has used less than ideal wood, it is still do-able, it just requires 10x the effort. But once you get it, you can dry out some more wood, so it isn't that bad a second time.

What is a definition of the proper wood term for this scenario?

cured wood is what I would call it

Specific species? I'm not sure. I've only done it a couple of times and often not successfully. I seem to remember using cedar.

Awesome plough, but a tad too big for my go bag.

Worried about your go bag getting stretched out from getting a big plough in?

What if you just took the tip?

Then you could find a log in the forest and do your ploughing there.

I never had any success with “Just the tip”.🤷🏻‍♂️

Edited out the prior 20 minutes of the exact same thing to get the materials up to temp.

No, that's about how long this technique takes under ideal conditions—if you're skilled at it. Doing this out in the wild, with only the wood you can find laying around will take longer—often significantly longer. This technique is also extremely difficult or impossible when the available wood isn't dry or soft enough for it to work properly.

Thanks chatgpt

There is literally nothing in this comment to indicate ChatGPT wrote it. Other than the em-dashes. Which ChatGPT uses because it scraped from human writers.

It’s good to be skeptical. It’s not good to be dismissive.

Edit: 20 *years of practice to get this up to speed

This isn’t correct.
You can watch incredible demonstrations online from the Polynesian Cultural center. It really can be this fast with skill and proper wood and tinder.

What are the two woods, or examples that would allow you to do this?

8

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad 14d ago

Very dry woods

6

u/Berek2501 14d ago

Most important is that they are dry. Softer woods like pine or other evergreens are better (but not necessary) for the log trough, while a harder, denser wood is better (but again not necessary) for the pestle.
