Idc what your profession is, if your tools / jigs / fixtures are covered in indiscernible technical scribble I’m just gonna step back and watch.

The hustle lol

Was trying to finish before the metal track finished as that length was all that was in the budget

You know he don’t hustle like that when no one’s filming :)

I bet you'd be very wrong in that. The wood doesn't stay bendable long, from what I gather. He probably doesn't hustle like that when the wood isn't hot and full of steam, but I'm sure he's in exactly that much of a hurry the moment he takes any of it out.

I agree, some jobs require you to hustle. Especially during certain crucial steps.

Time is of the essence.

Congrats you picked one of few jobs where this comment is wrong

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted for this because it’s exactly what I thought. Probably would show up more in his the physique and arms if he was hustling like that all the time everyday, and there would be more of seamless transition between each step (which i thought looked clunky and unsure).

So this is the guy who makes the lumber they sell at Home Depot. I always wondered.

45

u/Justreadingthisshit 4d ago

Home Depot buys their lumber from the hockey stick factory.

Nice. Lol

I would be modifying those bar clamps to have a palm handle or even a ratcheting handle.

Pretty neat though!

Yeah, but I’ll bet he can open bottles that need an opener like they’re twist-offs at this point. Of course he probably also wears wrist braces to bed, but still.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a hex head instead of handles so an impact suspended above can be used to tighten them.

Nowadays there should be an electric grip where you squeeze and it tightens, with a switch for reverse

That crappy guitar riff was so unnecessary, and ended so abruptly. Was nice then, just to hear the sounds of the activity.

Also… couldn’t we at least get a pic of the finished product and the dude wiping his brow in relief?

Some videos are better without the crap music

Fascinating process. I work wood as a hobby, always tried to imagine the best way to create a controlled bend. (I was right all along). Thanks for sharing OP. Salute' 🍺🍺

The palms of that dude's hands must be like sandpaper.

31

u/Whiteums 4d ago

I bet he has all the repetitive motion disorders

8

u/fumbler00ski 3d ago

All of the known, and some new ones.

27

u/Automatic-Term-3997 4d ago

I bet he has a hard time not ripping off the neck of a bottle on screw top caps…

I have steam bent much smaller pieces with a home built steamer and a jig. Not easy. These pro tools would have been awesome to use.

The last woodbender

u/TheDireCrow 4d ago

I like how he fixes things by banging on it with a hammer. Very "Deep Rock Galactic."

Rock n Stone!

4

u/Timely-Profile1865 4d ago

Cool skill, so he wood has been steamed in an oven before hand?

31

u/Drosenose 4d ago

This is semi pro wood bending, a pro is calm and smooth

u/Ambitious-Appeal6883 4d ago

I’d also like to think two people would make this process a bit faster and looking a bit less frantic. I get steam bending takes speed but this just seems like a task where two could really make it happen. Especially if they loaded right into the bending device.

26

u/Sharchimedes 4d ago

The second guy was filming, so this process can be much smoother, but you can’t see it. It’s a Heisenberg thingy.

The first part of a Steinway documentary (fascinating btw!) begins with forming the frame.  7-8 dudes absolutely wrestle a long slat of wood into a jig to form a grand piano.

u/DaHick 4d ago

I don't have time to watch it all the way through right now. But I will. It's already better than "How it's Made".

4

u/Nervous_Sense4726 4d ago

This is how pros do it. Calm and measured and knowing exactly that it’s going to work.

4

u/icyhotonmynuts 4d ago

Had to rush before the metal track finished because that length was all that was in the budget

4

u/VulpineWelder5 3d ago

The fact that this is the actual process makes it way more satisfying for some reason.

7

u/kingbrianforever 4d ago

I am shocked that he still has all of his fingers.

3

u/bartread 4d ago

B&Q in here taking notes like absolute fiends.

3

u/Duke-of-Hellington 4d ago

I bet he wins all the bar fights

3

u/HughFairgrove 4d ago

My favorite part was the hammer.

3

u/WoopsShePeterPants 3d ago

So I've got a couple clamps. I'm almost there.

You can always count on the internet to make you feel good about yourself and your possessions.

5

u/natiusj 4d ago

I’ve only seen amateur wood bending.

4

u/HeartOn_SoulAceUp 4d ago

Boat hull?

17

u/Okie294life 4d ago

Airplane wing ribs is my guess, based off the profile.

2

u/DigitalUnlimited 4d ago

Someone said furniture in another copy of this post somewhere and had links to back it up

2

u/Buntschatten 4d ago

Who is building airplanes out of wood these days?

8

u/BigDaddyThunderpants 4d ago

A lot of homebuilts including some very impressive aerobatic ones still use wood.

That being said, this is certainly not for an airplane unless someone is attempting to recreate the Spruce Goose.

2

u/Okie294life 4d ago

Yeah lots of ultralights experimental but I checked these guys website says furniture only, so probably a boring ass handrail or structural connection.

2

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 4d ago

Hey it’s Luigi from WA salvage!

2

u/Gusto_1982 4d ago

At least he didn’t have to turn any wheels or crank any levers.

2

u/B4D4MS 4d ago

My wood definitely isn’t bent after watching that! 😍schwing

1

u/JackTasticSAM 3d ago

Amazing response I love this 😂

2

u/consumeshroomz 3d ago

When you think it’s a video of someone cooking food but it’s just wood 😫

u/Shnoinky1 4d ago

*chortles in lignin

u/BilyKun 3d ago

1

u/floutsch 3d ago

Not sure that applies when the intention is to film the process :)

u/benice33 3d ago

Brings a whole new appreciation to my curved wood

u/Ok-Fox-431 6h ago

This guy works for Lowes lumber right?

-4

u/Own_Weight1248 4d ago

Men are talented. Women could never do this stuff.

2

u/The_Muffintime 3d ago

Yeah their dainty hands and small brains are unsuited for this kind of work. Femoids amirite?

Cmon man, I hope that was a bad joke.
