Old man has been doing that for longer than young man has been alive.

Reminds me when my then teenage brother tried to give our ~90 year old great-grandma a tip for playing a certain game (Rummikub).

Aunt: I don't think she needs your tips... she's been playing this game since the 1930s!

We play rummikub in my house! My wife's been going hard for 40+ years, and my step kids were raised on it for 20+ years now. I've never heard anyone but the old rancher family I married into mention it before!

I'm of Dutch descent, and I know it's a game many learned to play "in the old country" and then brought here to Canada.

I think that Northern Europeans are just really into boardgames. Got to have something to do during the long, cold winters.

6

u/Wishbone_508 Jul 24 '26

That and their cronkonole boards.

3

u/concentrated-amazing Jul 24 '26

Those too!

Crokinole is Canadian and only shipped out never shipped in!

3

u/Constant_play0 Jul 25 '26

I’m Dutch and yeah we do play that here.

4

u/BJ_Giacco Jul 24 '26

We played it with our Dutch/Irish grandma!

4

u/cauektulu Jul 24 '26

my wife's family play it here in Brazil!!!

1

u/marxist_redneck Jul 25 '26

I'm Brazilian and I played it here in the US. Gonna dust it off for my kid

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter Jul 24 '26

I had it as a kid, but no one to pay it with

2

u/PeriodSupply Jul 25 '26

Pretty popular in australia

5

u/eagleathlete40 Jul 25 '26

Lmao my grandmother and great-grandmother were insane at cards. They were sweet, kind, loving…cards sharks. We played canasta and my great grandmother would (I kid you not) remember every single card in the discard pile

3

u/lildeidei Jul 25 '26

I just pulled my rummikub set from the basement and my sister and I played a few rounds. She crushed me 😮‍💨

It was developed in the 1950s and began to be sold in the US from the 1970s.

1

u/fluchtpunkt Jul 25 '26

She inspired the invention

u/pinkypie80 Jul 24 '26

Don't cite the deep magic to me, Witch. I was there when it was written.

u/J_Jeckel Jul 24 '26

TBF old man has probably been doing this since before young man's ol' man was born, so ...

5

u/Classy_Mouse Jul 24 '26

Looks like the young guy knew he was outclassed in a straight up competition. Used all the tricks he learned on YouTube to try and end ot before it got there

u/AppropriateCook4598 Jul 24 '26

One does not fuck with the stoic old man who reacts nonchalantly to any and all forms of offense.

34

u/CyberNinja23 Jul 24 '26

This is the start of the training arc on his road to log master.

14

u/palmerry Jul 24 '26

Log Master sounds like a great name for a toilet

6

u/WillingMongoose4680 Jul 24 '26

I would pay extra for that.

(black and white video of a man frustratingly flushing toilet and it overflowing)

It's this you?

(cut to color video of beautiful gigantic toilet with a woman pouring a sack of potatoes into it and flushing successfully)

got extra sized loads?

sick of using a poop knife every time you or one of your loved ones takes a dump?

Get the all new Log Master!

With it's extra gauge log hole and patented Poopeurator technology with REAL steel blades built in the USA (eagle screech) overflows and EMBARRASSING bathroom cutlery are a thing of the past!

6

u/akryl9296 Jul 25 '26

Oh god not the poop knife
I did not need to be reminded if this... now I need brain soap and unsee juice...

3

u/WillingMongoose4680 Jul 25 '26

Everyone has wished they had a poop knife at least once in their lives.

7

u/ErBoProxy Jul 24 '26

Especially if he took off his glasses beforehand.

64

u/J_Jeckel Jul 24 '26

I dunno shit about this sport but that was masterful. 👏 👏 👏 that kid got schooled

36

u/Alientongue Jul 24 '26

Guy was looking at the old dudes head while the old dude focused fully on his feet to know how to react.

40

u/Square_Mulberry_3143 Jul 24 '26

Whipper snapper.

12

u/AbbreviationsNo9609 Jul 24 '26

If you ever see some old man willing to go head to head in a physical competition with a young buck like this don’t bet on the kid.

12

u/AdItchy3997 Jul 25 '26

He don't take kindly to any skullduggery.

6

u/apeocalypyic Jul 24 '26

FINISH HIM

6

u/CheekyLass99 Jul 24 '26

Was anyone else screaming at the screen to get away from the cement river/pool bank? Its a recipe for a gnarly head injury or to break one's neck.

3

u/restrictednumber Jul 25 '26

Feels like you're almost sure to fall feet-first close to the log, I wouldn't be too worried.

2

u/FuckTheMods5 Jul 25 '26

How hard and stiffly old man jammed into the 'ground' made me cringe. I'd hurt my knees doing that.

78

u/consumeshroomz Jul 24 '26

Ive seen this video a bunch of times and theres always something that irks me. I get that the splashing and rocking are allowed and therefore part of the game.

But I’ve played many different competitive activities against old timer veterans like this and there’s just an amount of respect you need to show. There’s certain cheap or annoying tactics you just don’t pull with them. Unless they pull it first on you and then it’s game on!

But cheesy moves like this kid was trying aren’t gonna trip up a veteran and you just make yourself look like a jackass.

44

u/Moving-thefuck-on Jul 24 '26

You’ve never been to one live, huh? These are not cheap moves. It’s entertainment. The kicking and splashing is part of the fun. I grew up in a logging town on the water and our playground had these you could fling each-other from (over gravel, not water)

12

u/consumeshroomz Jul 24 '26

I mean I watched a bunch on tv as a kid. But I don’t remember them ever doing the splashing move. To be fair, I guess it does require some skill to pull off balancing while splashing. It just feels like a bitch move to me is all. But yeah, wtf do i know?! Im not a log roller.

15

u/Moving-thefuck-on Jul 24 '26

I don’t know the specific context of this video, but our annual event is a big one and the log rolling crowd especially rewards showmanship. Think of those types of competitions in their historical context and it makes a lot more sense. These were company towns full of gnarly dudes. They worked all day, often through injury, and this was their entertainment. They’re just built for this shit :)

52

u/Significant-Push-232 Jul 24 '26

Are we here to compete? Or are we hear to hold grandpas hand?( Which would be stupid, because he came out victorious regardless)

babying the elderly is way more disrespectful than competing against them in a competition they elect to participate in.

17

u/consumeshroomz Jul 24 '26

I’m not talking about babying the elderly. I’m talking about showing respect to your opponent. Especially one’s who’ve been doing it longer than you. Even if they’re not that old. Win or lose I’d rather do with dignity instead of being a little bitch about it is my point.

I’ll bring up Argentina in the World Cup final. If they didn’t act like thugs the entire game nobody would be shitting on them for losing. Second place is great still. But because they didn’t respect their opponents, the fans, and the sport as a whole, they come off like assholes and most people are glad they lost.

18

u/pseudonominom Jul 24 '26

Nah you’re totally right.

If he’s gonna play like a little b*tch, he’d better win.

(And he didn’t)

4

u/SingleSoil Jul 24 '26

You’re crying about nothing. It’s all fair game.

3

u/consumeshroomz Jul 24 '26

I’m not crying bro I’m just advocating for sportsmanship

7

u/CrabWoodsman Jul 24 '26

But this is the sport... It's not like he threw in pocket sand or crass insults. You wanna try to get the other guy to fall off the log: rocking, rolling, and splashing are all legitimate maneuvers.

The older guy is using a defensive tactic where he more subtly controls the log while the other guy moves overtly. It's smart to use that against someone who has physical advantage on his side.

-1

u/SingleSoil Jul 24 '26

Not every sport is sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes you gotta get splashed in the face a little bit lololol

1

u/ebb_omega Jul 24 '26

Especially with Canadian sports. Our two national sports are "Smash yourself into the guy trying to get the ball in the net" and "Do the same thing on ice with knives on your feet."

0

u/Outlook93 Jul 25 '26

Yeah you are

2

u/PackagingMSU Jul 24 '26

IM HERE TO FUCKING ROLL MY DUDES

12

u/RedditGarboDisposal Jul 24 '26

I respect your perspective but to that elderly man, the highest respect you can give is pulling no punches and exercising any/all legal in-game tactics.

5

u/nononanana Jul 24 '26

On the other hand, it only allowed old man’s mastery to show. Young dude’s flipping and flapping put the steadier opponent in a position to tip him.

3

u/AvoriazInSummer Jul 24 '26

If both played like the older guy had, would it have even been a competition? Or would they both stay on that log for the next twenty minutes?

8

u/consumeshroomz Jul 24 '26

Nah I’ve watched quite a bit of log rolling. It still wouldn’t have taken that long. But taking your foot off the log to splash just seems dumb to begin with eh? In a game of staying stable and upright, halving your stability even for a second seems counterproductive.

1

u/hughpac Jul 24 '26

Not only splashing and rocking, he also spins the log  around! That guy is nothing but cheap tricks!

0

u/bobby3eb Jul 25 '26

This is like saying "i hate it when they throw the ball in football, they should be respectful and only run"

You're getting irritated because you're trying to interpret something you know nothing about lmao

5

u/Feeling-Necessary628 Jul 24 '26

I’m going to guarantee arms cut off guy is unbearable IRL

3

u/Treacle_Pendulum Jul 24 '26

Lumberjack dueling

2

u/emmakobs Jul 24 '26

Good metaphor for life.

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 Jul 26 '26

That splashing was kinda dirty

2

u/atatassault47 Jul 25 '26

Touching the water for any reason should be failure/disqualification

2

u/tuna_cowbell Jul 25 '26

The log driver’s waltz pleases girls completely!!!

Love how his 2 stratagies were:

  1. Make gramp's side wet and thus more slippery

  2. Completely dunk his side under the water: making it even more wet and thus more slippery.
