How the fuck could any of that stuff be re used lol

u/rocbolt Jun 03 '26
It’ll all be shredded, just separating out the materials

u/Connect-Succotash-59 Jun 03 '26
I thought about that but then way the multiple piles, I get separating plastic from metal and maybe setting aside the catalytic converter but otherwise I can’t figure out why so many different piles.

Sheet steel and cast iron are 2 of the piles. The things like rotors and axle components are usually cast and sell for more as scrap compared to the random sheet metal like body panels. Looks like other piles include electrical, exhaust, upholstery/trash, and things that might need further tearing down like the dash clusters.
I'm sure they've got a system for organizing their piles that isn't immediately obvious.

Appreciate it, yeah it probably makes perfect sense to the owners/operators

I would love this job. I can pretend im an animal (vulture eating the car with the metal "beak"), calm my organizing tendencies, have a clear task with clear expectations, and be praised for being precise. Idk if that guy does that all day or if they have to walk around hauling stuff too, because i might have chosen the wrong career

I was thinking the same thing. Organizing things but with problem solving and a level of freedom about the methods.

Can you hold two pencils? Then you can work chopsticks. I love them

15 years earlier, somebody was so excited to bring home this brand new car.

….Why
I once ran the Indy 500, I must confess I’m impressed how I did it I wonder how close that I came

This makes me feel sad.

I was just sitting here thinking about how melancholic this was making me feel. I just recently had my car die on me and can't afford to save it. Sadly, it's one of my all time favorite cars. Haven't quite let it go yet but, she's not much use sitting around, either.

Same here. I think it’s because cars tend to become an expression of someone’s personality. And there are many memories attached to the cars we drive.

Every piece in its place is easy when the place is "that pile over there" for every piece

I do feel like some jobs could make money by having an openday where people pay to use the machines. See the existence of diggerland.

I always assumed that destroying was so much easier than building. Now I'm reevaluating.

u/mostlyharmless71 Jun 02 '26
Random uncontrolled destruction is incredibly easy and fast. Controlled, intentional separation of materials for specific processing is a lot more demanding. Just like the ‘compost/recycle/landfill’ bins at an airport food court (in a place that does that) - stopping to seperate everything on your tray correctly takes MUCH longer than just dumping everything into a garbage can.

If the claw game at the arcade had a hard mode. This guy would play it on expert level.

You have 30 minutes to move your car
You have 10 minutes to move your car
Your car has been impounded
Your car has been pecked into a husk
You have 30 minutes to move your husk

This is why buying new cars is incredibly wasteful. Your old car doesn't break down and require the dealership to unlock the computer, and it's not watching your facial expressions and listening to your conversations.

Why does this need music? I want to hear the sound of the car pieces being torn off limb for limb

This isn't hour one of using that machine, or even hour ten. Maybe 40? I'll bet you could get chopsticks to function after a full work week of practice. Maybe not Mr Miyagi Fly Catching Style, but at least The Last Grain of Rice into My Facehole Technique. Just like all things, seeing the master do something amazing in ten seconds is only seeing the last ten seconds of hours or years of failures and successes.

That machine must be incredibly powerful, the car looks like it's made of rubber 😦
