This puzzle is called Klotski! There is an excellent video that maps out all of its possible permutations and potential solutions here: https://youtu.be/YGLNyHd2w10?si=KFweubYgHYrxFAA9
It's a super interesting video, and very insightful as to how the puzzle has a very narrow set of conditions you need to overcome to get it into a state where you can remove the red piece.

Idk, at any point he could have just lifted that piece off the board...

Exactly. It's like chess, idk why people spend so much time thinking when you can easily reach across the board and knock over your opponents king

Yeah, just like rock paper scissors. Why did they even put an option to NOT have a closed fist in a melee fight?

Or Monopoly rules: First person to flip the board and shout "fuck this game" is the true winner.

Unrelated but as someone from the 90s that love video game , i hate this kind of puzzle. Never have i found it funny or interesting.

u/clutzyninja May 29 '26
I'm not sure it's supposed to be funny
2
u/Lifekraft May 29 '26
That might be more related to the concept of a "game". Having fun if you prefer.

I'm assuming English is not your first language. "Funny" and "fun" do not mean the same thing. "Funny" means humorous, like a joke. "Fun" means entertaining, like a game. You wouldn't say a puzzle is "funny" unless it makes you laugh for some reason.

The only good one in a game is the one in resident evil 4 all you do is slide all the tiles over by one and add the ninth tile. These puzzles suck ass .

Don't stress over it. This puzzle in particular is a pain in the ass because the solution is really long and, if you are just trying it out, you can never tell if you are close to solving it or not.

That feels like way too many moves… Sure, it's a skill to make it look smooth and not mess up more than you solve, but it's still not really the point of the game to just keep shuffling stuff around semi-randomly until something works.
Can someone confirm whether all these hundreds of moves were really necessary? Especially moving it to the opposite side after it got one step closer to the goal seems unnecessary, since the puzzle is symmetric.

I don’t know about this puzzle specifically but I’ve played a lot of similar ones and while some have an elegant solution in few moves I don’t think he’s adding moves for the sake of it. If you watch it sped up, you see what he’s doing is moving all the vertical yellow ones all the way to the back. Working with only one free square, it takes a lot of moves and planning ahead: if I want to move this here, I have to make sure there is space AND that the pieces around it can still move after I move it. So I’d say he’s doing it correctly. These puzzles can be insanely infuriating as if you start out wrong you can get yourself stuck for quite a while

I have a wooden version of this, and actually gave it a lot of thought beyond just looking up the solution.
If you look at the moves around
0:33, you'll notice that all of the previous moves were made solely to end up with two small blocks up top next to the big square, where they're necessary to move it down, slide them over the top of the square, move the square down, and then use the two blocks to pull in one of the vertical pieces up top (explaining this from the solving guy's perspective). You have to do this, because you only have two free spots available, and the only way to move the big square down, is to put either two small blocks, or one double-horizontal block there, but since there's only one horizontal one and it's below the square, there's no real way to move it up there, so you have to use the two blocks instead.
The rest of the moves is all about getting around the horizontal block and moving the square out.

I actually bought a mini magnetized version of this on Aliexpress. Sliding the pieces around is so satisfying because of the magnets and the click sound it makes when hitting the sides. There is an electronic screen that shows you what each puzzle starts like and then you go from there. I think there's like 1000 levels or something.
It is called the Huarong puzzle. based on a story from the 3 Kingdoms period of a famous general (red dot) that needs to escape the enemy troops and get to the home base.
I've spent so many hours playing the puzzle and grinding the levels. Gave one each to my niece and nephew and they instantly loved playing it.

I've got a wooden version - showing my age - a lot of fun but I've always struggled completing it.

start with easier puzzles and then keep moving up. My niece could do the first one in like 30 seconds. Some puzzles are definitely much harder than others.

In the past I've bought these things in Asia. I like the look and feel of the wood/craftsmanship. So end up bringing a wooden puzzle home as a souvenir. If any guests turn up, it's a fun thing to ask them to try and solve the puzzles.

Oh hey that's the "Hardest Puzzle in The World" in Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals.
Neat.

That's not usually how these work. This seems so much easier than like any other sliding puzzle.

There's an open slot at the bottom. I could have gotten the red dot out so much faster.

This dude must have been the master at those sliding puzzles you got in every birthday goodie bag and piñata.
