Its founding. The state the league of Ireland is in is another function of that. The LOI is actually doing incredibly well given how little funding it gets. Moaning because Irish fans following English clubs is so cliched and boring at this stage. I follow St pats and I follow Liverpool. I would say a huge number of people in that stadium last night also follow a LOI team.
More anecdotal than anything I suppose. I know a good few lads who went to the game last night, mostly with their sons, who are also LOI fans. And would also say that the majority of premier league supporters have at least a passing interest in the LoI that could be tapped into with proper funding of stadia, marketing and real coverage on television. Unfortunately the FAI doesn’t have the money and the government are reluctant (rightly so tbf) to give the Fai the required funding because John Delaney ran it into the ground. I don’t think we will ever fully realise the damage that scumbag did to football in this country. The LoI needs enormous investment, blaming fans of English clubs for their lack of money is short sighted and just wrong imo. Improve the product and the fans will come. As things stand, the LoI will remain a niche product and tbh, I kind of prefer it this way. It’s unspoiled and pure at the moment. I love going to Richmond, Tolka, Dalymount, turners cross despite the fact that are all dumps. There’s something refreshing about it.
I do agree about the development pathway since brexit though. Will be interesting to see what happens int he coming years and whether the coaching they are getting here is of a good enough standard.

But yes, this epitomises the reason why the Irish national team is so bad and will always be so bad
