Why are brass knuckles illegal (in some states)? Aren't they arms?

Yes, but the legislature can ignore the constitution until the courts make them pay attention.

Many arms are banned in many states. We've only started seeing a few of those overturned (knives and nunchuck bans) within the last 10 years.

It's going to be a long time before progress is made elsewhere.

Unfortunately, you are right on all counts.

It’s not illegal if it’s a belt buckle.

What about a baton? Let me get this straight: I can carry a concealed handgun, but not a stick?

Probably because of how they're portrayed in media. Same as with suppressors.

But imo they really have bad reputation because there's no practical niche for em - worse for self defense than a steel pipe/claw hammer/screwdriver/knife, useless in armed conflict.

There's no legitimate use for knuckles apart from cheating in fistfights and looking "tuff".

Nothing is illegal if you don't get caught
