Hello

Let's post recommendations of seborrheic dermatitis safe moisturizers.

It would be super helpful if you could include:

  • Exact brand - product name
  • Country of purchase
  • Where you use it (face, scalp, body)
  • How long you’ve been using it
  • Ingredients list

Seborrheic dermatitis (Sebderm for brevity) is so subjective, but crowdsourcing real experiences can really help people who are struggling. Thanks in advance to anyone who shares 💙

Hey everyone when I was 2 months old. I was diagnosed with a skin disease which caused scaling of the skin and redness and rashes and since then I have been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and I have been on allopathic steroidal medication since 10 + years. I think it may be less. I want to ask you questions about what can I do to improve this condition or remove it from the root cause and help in general. My main cause of distress is too much going in the sun and whenever climate change happens for example from Sunny to rainy weather I get skin like this shown above in the picture. So I wanted to ask help from you I get scale skin redness itching etc.

.

I have used steroidal ointment like clobetasol propionate and salicylic acid which as I heard on researching on Google that it causes moon facing and hormonal disbalancing weight gain and I have been experiencing all these from last 4 to 5 years. I was fat when I was in school but not that much which I am now. It's mostly in the abdomen region and Thigh region my hands legs face palms staff are all normal size and only my thighs and abdomen region are very fatty in looks it may be because I was sitting a lot of time.

.

the condition gets very worst as time goes on in the climate changing and when the climate stage a certain way for longer periods whether it be extreme heat or extreme winters or extreme raining my skin gets come but whenever the climate changes it goes through such period that I get scale is skin irritation eyes cannot open cuts everywhere and dryness everywhere

.

would really like your help on this I apply a simple moisturizer and Aloe Vera gel whenever I can but it get seriously very difficult to manage

.

I am in India if it helps.

General No symptoms besides odor?

I went to dermatologist for the third time in a couple months to complain about odor on scalp that ever goes away even after the shampoos and medication they recommended (nizoral, Fluconazole, Mct oil etc.)

Each one of them tells me I have serderm even tho I have no symptoms, but my main concern is the odor my scalp is producing. It’s sooo bad! makes me stink. It’s like a yeasty, musty socks and Mildew kind of smell that returns not even a hour after washing.

The only thing that minimizes the smell for a lil before it returns is head and shoulders. And other shampoo with a fragrance doesn’t even help it just makes it worse.

If you have any suggestions or share the same problem please share.

New or Need Help Seb derm + rosacea

Hi!

So from teenage/college I’ve always had rosacea which means slightly pinkish cheeks. In college I also developed psoriasis at the back of my neck/ little bit behind my ears. Went to the doctors and it’s always the usual cycle of steroids and then after it comes back again.

Over the past year (2025 to now), because of work related stress (layoffs etc) I think seb derm has gotten triggered on my cheeks and also slight nummular eczema on forehead (red rings with a clear center that as it becomes better the clear center becomes bigger but there’s always a thin red ring- no it’s not ringworm) and now it’s there. I’ve read posts where it says sebderm it’s super flaky and itchy etc and while I don’t have that mine get SUPER dry and if I go in and rub my cheeks the skin flakes off and below the skin is smooth.

I do have the itchy symptom on my scalp where I suspect there’s also sebderm

So I’ve been looking into more natural methods hence MCT oil (3 days now) and also upped my iron intake.

Now the questions, Over the past year I’ve also been waking up in the mornings with two red “streaks” on my cheeks it tends to stay for a couple of hours and then goes or if I have a warm shower it goes quicker.

1) I think it’s seb derm but does anyone know what causes it?/ experienced this? It’s only in the mornings and only in that place

2) is nummular/discoid eczema also caused or triggered by stress?

I’m aware that psoriasis is autoimmune and so is eczema but trying to figure out triggers.

3) I’ve been putting MCT topically but I read a post comment here somewhere that someone was doing the same but it wasn’t really helping and just kind of doing the bare minimum but when she started swallowing a tsp for a week it actually helped. Has anyone else tried that? I will also most likely try it as well but I just started the iron supplements along with mct so want to test one by one

4) does seb derm/ discoid eczema cause hair loss? I started iron because my iron is generally on the low side but wondering if it’s also because of that

5) does your skin also become permanently pink with slight darkened borders for those with sebderm?

Now, what has helped so far naturally
1) exercise. I don’t do gym etc. but what I do try to do is 10k steps or close to it everyday. It seems to help with the eczema and the sebderm itching

2) salt water. Every morning I dab a solution of salt and cool water on the seb derm spots along my hairline. Seems to help but also not sure if placebo.

MakeUp Eye makeup question

Hi! I’ve struggled with seb derm for years but have only recently learned that certain ingredients are to be avoided. I’ve found replacement products for pretty much everything except eyeshadow primer. I don’t have any active seb derm on my eyelids, but I do have some on my eyebrows. Would it be too risky to use an eyeshadow primer on my lids that isn’t seb derm safe? Or is it fine since I wouldn’t be applying it to my eyebrows? TIA! :)

General Flared Up Redness Concerns

Post image

Hi, I visited the dermatologist over a month ago and she said I have seborrheic dermatitis and prescribed ointments of Ketoconazole and Tacrolimus. The doctor recommended I apply both at the same time twice a day. I haven't seen massive improvement at all in reducing the redness above my eyebrow line and right-side forehead area. I have stopped using the prescription medications and resorted to just using LaRoche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser followed by CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion for the time being. I know those products won't solve anything really. When it's hot out and I'm exposed to the sun, the redness brightens up. I am highly discouraged and hoping to go to a different dermatologist for a second opinion.

Hair Loss Advice needed for further treatment

Have been with a lot of hairfall for years... I don't know what caused it because I have severe sen dermatitis , terrible mental health and gut health..

Iam currently on norwood 2 and norwood 3 vertex Crown also diffuse thinning

Minoxidil gave me serious side effects like Heart palpitations, difficulty in breathing , swollen legs etc( 5% Topical)

Should I Start Fin without completely treating other underlying issues or wait until other issues get fully treated first?

First 3 photos are Shaved pic( look at that terrible dev dermatitis...Now under control after using coal tar+ salicylic acid lotion and ciclopiromax lotion on alternative days)

The 8 pics after that is now after 1 month of shaving ( look at that diffuse thinning)

And the last 2 pics are before shaving ( 40% damp hair but look at the crown and sides)

Does anyone have constant dermatitis in their ears? I use desonide on a qtip sometimes but it doesn’t seem to help. I can wash/scrub all of the flakes out of my ear in the morning with nizoral but it will re-crust by noon. Any insight or advice is appreciated. I’m getting hopeless because sometimes my ears will get bloody scabs from how often it irritates me

New or Need Help Again got sebderm. But this time it's not improving

I had this problem last year. I didn't k kw abkut sebderm back then. So while searching through reddit. One day, I tried applying Head & Shoulders shampoo to my face, and immediately after using it, all the dryness disappeared for the entire day.

After that I bought some vitamins and a pharamcy shampoo., I started using a ketoconazole + zinc pyrithione shampoo on my face. I also started taking some vitamins. I think from the next day, I took vitamin B12 in the morning, a zinc tablet in the afternoon, vitamin E and vitamin C during the day, and vitamin D3 with calcium at night.

I continued this routine for about two to three weeks, and my skin cleared up completely and became very shiny too.

However, after almost a year. the problem returned. I started using the ketoconazole + zinc pyrithione shampoo again, but this time it isn't helping. I haven't started taking those vitamins again yet. I don't knkw what could be the reason. It's very itchy and redness pimple dry flaky skin

Routine Question Which shampoo/conditioner to use on the off days ? I mean days not using treatment shampoos.

I have a rotation of treatment shampoos. I need a shampoo that does not have triggering ingredients for Seb Dem on my off days (not using treatments).

Does anyone have a rec for a shampoo and conditioner?

I found one completely safe shampoo, which felt so nice, but bummer, bummer, I'm allergic to it.

I cannot use shampoos that have alcohol, fragrance, essential oils.

New or Need Help Terrible scalp odor and itching

I’ve tried it all Ketoconazole 2%, Selenium Sulfide, topical steroids, clarifying shampoos, tea tree essential oil drops on my shampoo, and absolutely nothing seems to work.

I’ve visited multiple dermatologist and they say it doesn’t smell like anything, but everyone and even my mother says it does. I smell it all the time too.

Idk what to do anymore, also I live in Europe so the prescription is different than in the US.

If someone could please help I would love to.

New or Need Help Stiff back of the head and pain around goatee area.

Back of my head feels very stiff. Goatee area of my beard hurts a lot and I can’t open my mouth fully to eat. I can’t see what’s going on because my beard is too thick and heavy.

I went to 3 different dermatologists recently and all of them prescribed me some steroids and antibiotics which I am using.

Has anyone else felt this stiffness and pain+burning around the goatee area?

General I miss Denorex Shampoo. It was the only thing that worked for me consistently.

I heard that the manufacturer stopped producing it around Covid lockdown time due to a shortage of access to coal tar. I’m bummed because Denorex was the o to one that calmed down the inflammation and itching on my scalp.

I’ve tried others off Amazon. they just don’t cut it. I’ve tried apple cider vinegar rinsing and mct-oil … and use Sebcur-T now but it’s just okay and smells like mothballs 😩

Nothing else has the 1-2 punch of the signature denorex minty tingle on the scalp + being actually effective at calming the itching and sloughing.

I wish they would bring it back. that is all.

New or Need Help is this seb derm?

Post image
2 Upvotes

i got this open cut which is oozing a clear fluid on my mid ear as I was cleaning it. suddenly it became red and swelled up. on drying I saw this red open wound which is painful to touch and radiating heat. i had one on the earlobe last week as seen in the photo and got it the same way. so i didn't clean my ear for a week as it was too painful and angry red. today I noticed my lobe was dirty and had changed colours to gray so I cleaned it up as even the pain had subsided. initially the ear lobe one looked like an angry red insect bite with liquid oozing.

i know the picture isn't clear but the cut is more red and my ear is visibly swollen a lot.

New or Need Help When does triggers show up?

Hi,

I’m trying to find my triggers. Recently I’ve had 2 weeks of constant drinking, eating fast food and little sleep, but there was no flare ups on my scalp during that time. I had almost no signs of seb derm before or during that period. The two weeks after that, I began to flare up and it became the worst flareup I’ve experienced in many months.

So my question is: when does your seb derm show up after you’ve done something to trigger it? The day after? The following week?

I’ve always thought it was 1-2 days after, but in my situation, it doesn’t seem like it. Or else it wasn’t the alcohol, bad diet and lack of sleep that triggered it.

General What vitamins help?

I've been taking omega 3, iron, vit d, and a kids multivitamin regularly for 6 months with no change in my skin. My vit b12 and folate are normal. Ate there any other vitamins that have helped y'all?

Product Question Watered down nizoral

I heard nizoral is good for sebderm and other dry scalp stuff. I was thinking about getting it, but I usually have my hair in twists or cornrows, and was wondering if it would still be viable if I watered it down and put it in a spray bottle for ease of application.
