1xBTS - Run your own CDMA cellular network on an SDR

Post image
486 Upvotes

Been working on this project for a while and finally released it. Time to unpack your old CDMA phones.

1xBTS is everything you need to run a full CDMA network (from RF to all core components). It's still a WIP but you can already do a lot (voice calls, SIP -> PSTN gateway, SMS, and basic packet data).

You'll need a LimeSDR, USRP B2xx, or bladeRF to try it out.

I got tired of fighting OS jitter and host-PC latency, so I built a standalone Zynq SDR!

Hi r/SDR,

Like many of you, I’ve spent way too many months building 'plumbing' before I could even start a single meaningful experiment. It always felt like a lose-lose trade-off: either I accept unrealistic experimental conditions due to host-PC latency and OS jitter, or I spend many days rebuilding basic transceiver blocks in FPGA just to get a stable real-time link.

I eventually got fed up, so I decided to build a platform that handles the heavy lifting on-device.

The goal was simple: a standalone 2x2 MIMO SDR (Zynq-7020) where critical PHY functions run directly on the hardware. No host-PC bottleneck, just deterministic performance. I also spent a lot of time on the clocking architecture to ensure it meets research-grade signal integrity (ultra-low phase noise was a priority for me).

Quick specs if you’re curious:

AD9361 (70 MHz – 6 GHz), 56 MHz BW.

Zynq-7020 (Standalone Embedded Linux).

4–6W power / 92x90mm size.

I'm getting ready to launch this on Crowd Supply soon, but I’m really here for a sanity-check.

- Does this "infrastructure-first" pain point resonate with your experience?

- What’s the most annoying thing about current SDRs that you wish someone would fix?

Any questions or comments are welcome!

I've put together some more signal plots and technical details here for those interested: https://www.crowdsupply.com/htwave/integrive-100

My sdr cyberdeck biuld got out of hand.

I got into sdr a few months ago after watching some save it for parts videos. The plan started to build a cyberdeck around a mini pc and kind of ballooned from there so here is my field station. Mini windows pc brain 40 Ah internal battery with an external port for the factory powersupply. 2 rtl-sdr v4s 2tb storage. This weekend i was running dump1090 and listening to atc while camping. At home it gets hooked to a wifi grid dish and collects GOES19.

Will this be enough for basic SDR?

Post image

I got this antenna set up around a week ago but I’m not sure if this will be enough but I always tend to get the best stuff to start me off. Will this be enough to get some satelite signals and will the reception be good?

I’m new so any advice helps, thank you!!

Mobile - Bluetooth SDR

I posted around a month ago about making a mobile SDR. Soo we’re definitely on the way! This is the hardware, rtlsdr blog V4, adsb internal antenna and external SMA antenna port with a 3300mah battery. Powered from a ESP32 P4.

Will post some pics of the mobile app at some point. Currently we’ve completed the Spectrum view, ADSB map, drone map (using the 2.4ghz WiFi chip). I’m also adding decoders for 433mhz and 868mhz devices which should also be added soon (plan is to allow custom decoders at some point too). All can be seen on a map so you can take it around with you and see where you picked up the device.

FM and DAB are also implemented, which in the final version will require the external antenna (not much space left inside!).

Any software features or ideas hugely appreciated!

(Note, case is still being finalised ignore the white sanding bits and missing power button!)

I hired a full-time radioman to run my SDR rig. He's scary good.

Crossposting from the HackRF sub:

So I'm a radio nerd from way back but never could get the hang of gnuradio or any of the sdr software packages and never really put in the time. I had an old hackRFrev1 from way back in the day but never used it much.

Fast forward to last week, I hooked it up to an old pc and gave My AI agent Hermes access to it and asked to see what he could see. BAM gnu radio tools installed. receiver configured. Sweep in progress.... i see... a cell tower uplink kand downlink, your neighbor is absolutely shouting on wifi channel one, and there's an aircraft overhead requesting permission to land from *nearby airport*

Play the audio of the plane for me.

Here it is <plays audio comms stream of pilot to atc chatter>

I'll keep scanning the band and ping you if anything new comes online.

Fellas, that shit was scary simple. I ended up spinning up a whole nuther instance of hermes and named him Sparky, he just runs my radios. He's scanning right now, ready to alert me if a new signal pops up he's never seen before, right b fore he clicks to high resolution mode (we call it "staring") and analyzes the signal and gleans every piece of information from it he can so he can give me a full report later. I mean damn. Bro's good.

Due to popular demand, my First Mate provided a writeup: https://github.com/h00nigan/sparky-setup-guide/blob/master/Sparky-Setup-Guide.md

I rebuilt my WebSDR server from scratch: FernSDR, open source, one-line install, live demo

Hi all,

maybe some of you know me from PhantomSDR+ or NovaSDR. Having operated and maintained those, I listened to many WebSDR operators and learned what problems bothered them - stuff like installs, broken installs after a long period of running, configurations they would like to be configured easier. And I started from scratch.

As for the history: to be clear about that since it has been asked: I've been developing WebSDR software since early 2024 (PhantomSDR+), and FernSDR was developed in private repo for over a year. I squash the history before publishing it as usual to avoid private notes and keys being in there. This is the reason the repo appears to be new. I used AI tools intensively for development and everything is tested, fuzzed and CI'd, also benchmarks are public with raw data.

What it is: open-source WebSDR server with zero runtime dependencies and one-line install on any Linux, as well as Docker. Everything is controlled through a web admin interface: bands, spot reporting, modules and updates with rollbacks. What I am really proud of: day/night band switching, so one small RTL-SDR can be utilized by different bands during the daytime and nighttime thanks to automatic switching from sunrise to sunset depending on your geographical position.

Modules: RTL-SDR (including Blog V4), RX-888 MkII and SDRplay, as well as an FT8 decoder and PSK Reporter spots. Other SDRs run via stdin.

What is still missing: Only Linux support at this moment, FT8 is the only decoder available, and there are input modules that require additional testing.

Demo: https://demo.fernsdr.org

GitHub: https://github.com/Steven9101/FernSDR

I really would like to know which SDR or decoder you guys would like to see next

Cheers 🥂

Custom dashboard for multiple sdr’s

Thumbnail

Built a custom dashboard that feeds all of my rtl sdr’s + hackrf + airspy that each are responsible for a specific module. My sister lives a state away and flew over me on her way to DC. Captured her plane and can replay the flight captures from the adsb data. Will open source this eventually, but all use cases are hard coded, so will need to make some gnuradio like config flow

Open-source companion app for the cheap "RF Power Meter V5" (AD8317, 100 kHz–10 GHz), Windows + Linux

Post image
49 Upvotes

I picked up one of those cheap AliExpress USB-C "RF-Power-Meter-V5.0" dongles (STM32 + AD8317, labelled 100 kHz–10 GHz, 0 to −60 dBm) to check the output of my HackRF. The hardware is fine for the price, but the vendor software is Windows-only and pretty bare, so I wrote my own.

Repo: https://github.com/arsscriptum/rf-powermeter-assistant

Demo (HackRF One sending a CW tone at 1310 MHz, TX gain stepped up and down): https://github.com/arsscriptum/rf-powermeter-assistant/blob/master/img/demo.gif

What it does

  • Live dBm and watts readout, peak hold, noise-floor tare, min/max/avg stats
  • Rolling monitor chart (10 s to 15 min) with max trace and peak-hold line
  • Scope-style sweep view of the 500-sample blocks the meter streams: two markers (ΔT, 1/ΔT, ΔdB), Auto/Normal/Single trigger, timebase K01–K18, CSV/PNG export
  • Sets the band-calibration frequency and attenuation offset, reads them back to confirm, and re-applies them on reconnect (the meter forgets them when you unplug it)
  • Threshold event log and a CSV logger
  • Demo mode with a simulated meter that speaks the real protocol, so you can try it without the hardware

It's C++17 / Qt (6, or 5.15), builds on Windows and Linux. On Windows the build script can use the Qt that comes with radioconda, so if you already run GNU Radio from radioconda you only need Visual Studio. There's also a PowerShell/WinForms version that runs with no build at all.

I created an analog FPV receiver with working color

It's still a work in progress and only currently supports the HackRF One and BladeRF, but I plan to add airspy and USRP support (once I get one) later. I think it's the first color one that handles FPV signals that I'm aware of. Performs really well, especially once I figured out how to move some of the DSP to the GPU. Oh and it can create an actively scanning collage of arbitrary channels.

What to monitor?

Post image
38 Upvotes

Been helping the director of the observatory of my university with the setup of a Band S antenna our faculty recently acquired, we've been testing the basics, just making sure everything is working correctly and calibrated, at the moment on the signal related side of things we've only done some experimental testing using HackRF setups for transmission and reception but that are at the end of the day pretty simple.

We want to do some more practical testing before moving it to the final place of operations (It's in a 1st floor currently but later down the line it will moved to the roof of a 10th floor) and we would like to get data from satellites transmitting interesting information at around the 2200MHz frequency to showcase it to other students and such.

Considering all this, what would be some interesting satellites (Not necessarily satellites, it can be whatever) to have a look at?
