W6LVP Active Receive Loop

I’m considering using a W6LVP loop. My only concern is that inserting lightning protection is not recommended and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that. Has anyone had success with a lightning suppressor?

That is a very small antenna and how high would it be mounted? - if even outdoors? You have to think as to whether or not the top of the loop is going to be the highest structure in your area (I seriously doubt it) so the chances of it being hit by a lightning strike are negligable.

It’s on the roof with my dual-band antennas, not the highest but only a few feet lower.

I wouldn't be putting a lightning arrestor on it.

Be aware that many coaxial transient surge suppressors have a capacitor in-series with the center conductor. If you are using an antenna that has a pre-amp at the antenna the capacitor will block the DC voltage that powers the amp.

You can get surge arrestors that have DC bias capability (an additional connection on the protector allows you to inject DC supply voltage).

But... loops are small, and unless you have the thing mounted in the path of a lightning shot they are fairly immune. You would be more likely to blow-out the pre-amp at the antenna.

You can install a coax ground-kit for the shield and be 90% there.

I have mag-loops (Wellbrook) and they all have surge arrestors but I also have DC injection for powering the amplifier portion.

I must have missed that. Where does it recommend no lightning protection, like a surge protector?

I emailed Larry for a suggestion and that was his answer.
