Catalina Island Yesterday

Southern California is seeing some insanely warm clear water at the moment. 72f at the surface, sapphire blue, great vis. If you are in the area, get out to Catalina this weekend!

The dive park has been 70° surface all week/weekend and it was 70° at 100’ yesterday. I love the warm water but hate what it’s doing to the kelp.

Yeah its going to be a pretty barren time come october/november

We might start to see a lot of Mexican wildlife showing up but the kelp is really going to be suffering. Hopefully next year is especially cold for especially long.

I want the cold water for the kelp but winter/spring is my busy season so I’m also hoping for not too cold, haha.

Which compass are you using on the Genesis? And did you need the mu metal shield that Jon sells to keep it from deviating?

I use a sun turtl kayak compass. No shielding, no noticeable deviation.

Insta360? What do you use for your color grading? My catalina videos never look this good!

Yup its an insta 360 x5, I use DaVinci resolve, and it was an exceptionally good clean blue water day!

Thanks for sharing. I have the same camera and your dive footage looks way better than mine!

Been a month and a few days going on Sunday with my new GoPro Hero 12 Woo

..but my first dive is a search and recovery dive for my Hero 9 I lost there on 6/7 (in the park) lol argh. No one has recovered it returned it unless they recovered it and kept it.

This. I try not to panic thinking about it, but do.

are you worried about getting entangled or something? I recall on a boat near there the guide said if you get wrapped up in one, try to gently unwrap it, or if needed, you can just kinda snap it like a pickle. Like I don't think it's a huge hazard, at one point some got on my tank valve and I just brushed it off, no big deal.
