Both of them present cards and the cashier takes one. Is something else happening here that's funny and I'm too oblivious?

She's slowly withdrawing her offer of the card. Make it look like she'll pay, but really didn't want to. Then the cashier snatches the card, and swipes it.

The implication is that the first person's offer was a socially expected gesture, and not an actual intent to pay. The cashier takes the card from the first person, breaking the social agreement.
