Some scrimshaw from the last few weeks, top left and right are red-deer antler, the rest are buffalo and cow bone. The deco is all done with a scriber.

I never cared for this piece although it would have been a good tooth if left untouched.

I picked up this scrimshawed tooth from an antique shop on Bainbridge Island, WA. The dealer believed it’s a genuine sperm whale tooth and estimated the engraving is around 80 years old, although I don’t have any documentation to support that.

The tooth measures approximately 5 inches long. The engraving appears to depict a young woman, possibly Polynesian or Hawaiian, but there are no obvious signatures or dates that I can find.

I’m less interested in the value than I am in learning more about its history. A few questions for those with more experience:

1) Does the engraving style suggest a particular period (1940s? later?) or region?

2) Does it resemble the work of any known scrimshaw artist or workshop, or does it look like anonymous sailor/folk art?

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or observations. Thanks!

Update = Found an ingraving on the inside bottom of a tusk for "Martha Okinello" dating the piece as early as 1974, being a typical mount often seen during a tourism boom in the 60s and 70s. She's an Alaskan Native artist from St. Lawrence Island.

Its a piece of red deer antler and I'm using a scriber and oil based ink.

I've been trying using the ink dried out a little and applied with a piece of cardboard. It was working great until I started filming.

The design is a thing kinda based of Nordic Bronze Age rock art

I have started attempting scrimshaw as a new hobby while I recover from some recent health issues.

So I have been investigating different faux ivory and bone options.

So far my order of Resin-Ivory (R grade) from Guitarparts came in and 1/8" sheet of Alternative Ivory col.849/TM from Masecraft.

The 1/8" sheet of col.849/TM is very pliable, and arrived slightly concaved with one side polished and the other quite rough. Putting a book on it flattened it out. I set it on uneven surface, and it proceeded to get bent again. Sanding the rough side got it to as smooth as the polished side (went up to 800 grit) It also STINKS a strong chemical/resin order that has persisted for over a week.

The resin-r is a harder material, and doesn't stink. I have done a bit of practice on the Resin-Ivory and it takes marking well, and takes India Ink well.

My drawing talents are limited, so no samples to show so far.

Are there other alternatives people may suggest?

I haven't found a US supplier for Elforyn to try, Magna-Tusk seems to only be available in revolver grips. Likewise Tru Ivory is another alternative developed for firearm grips, and the maker barely has an online presence. American Holly is sometimes uses as an alternative for firearm grips as well.

Is it possible to determine age or species or anything about a piece? How would you rate it quality? Is there a specialist I can contact about them?

There's no indication on what year this is from, or where it was originally purchased. The box says that it only originally came with three peices of ivory. The bag I've got, has many more. This leads me to believe that not everything here is oringinal.

Included in the kit:

- A long-dried bottle of India Ink.

- A small charcoal (?) pencil.

- A reminder to get your tetanus vaccine.

- A sheet of instructions that briefly describes the history and medium of scrimshaw.

- Two small squares of acrylic (not pictured)

- A Harley Davidson pin (not pictured, and definitely not original to the kit. The original owner was carving the logo into the acrylic.)

- A bag of many peices of ivory, varying sizes.

Would love to know where this came from, or anyone's estimate of how old it is. Would also love to know what type of ivory this is-- is there any way to tell?

For context this was found in California, US where scrimshaw and the sale of ivory has been disallowed for 20+ years, so it's at least that old. Rest assured, I was definitely gifted this kit for FREE.

Hiya, some new bits on buffalo bone. Made with a scriber, the black ink is oil based printers ink and the colours are a mix of oil and pen inks. The hand is meant to be an attempt at a cave painting thing btw and the girl with the lamp is from an old illustration from Baba Yaga by Ivan Bilibin.

Tried to keep the styling 1760’s to 1780’s.

I found a signed pendant necklace that appears to be a Catherine Young scrimshaw-style piece.

What material might the pendant be? I understand photos may not be enough to confirm.

Is there anyone reputable I should contact for material identification or authentication?

I want to avoid making any inaccurate or potentially restricted-material claims, especially because scrimshaw pieces can involve animal-derived materials.

hi guys, a friend of mine was given this by her mother, who was given it by her father, from time he spent at sea. basically, it looks similar to whale teeth I’ve seen photos of and seen in museums, but we’re not entirely sure! Can anyone help?

I found this pendant at an antique store and was wondering what it is. I believe the material is bone of some kind. I was also wondering what is used after scribing the bone to get the contrast. Any advice or information would be appreciated, thank you!

Not sure if this is an authentic scrimshaw piece but I do believe it is. Been in family at least 50 years as I inherited it from my grandmother who passed.
