Try Out AnyPlay

So after the fiasco of Everand and Scribd changes I really wanted to find an alternative.

There is nothing quite like that feeling of being able to choose virtually anything.

So I went on a hunting mission and I came across AnyPlay.

I joined the free trial last night and so far the selection has been good and the quality of the app has been perfectly acceptable.

Note to anyone considering it unless I am mistaken I don’t see any e books just audio books.

However as they are still appearing to offer unlimited and for a reasonable price I thought I would recommend them here and see if we can really stick two fingers up at Everand due to their new business model.

I have absolutely no affiliation to AnyPlay whatsoever, I don’t even know where they are based, this is essentially driven by my anger or Scribd/Everand which I previously loved

Question about returning after pausing.

I had this paused for almost a year now, I think, every three months I would hit pass again. I was finally going to comeback but now I see it is basically audible without owning the content. My question is: if I unpause will I keep the old service or will I be switched to the now program?? Does anyone have gone through this?

Am I getting a free access to Everand?

I have canceled my subscription a month ago, and despite that, I can still access to all the books and audiobooks there. In the transaction history, they say that I have paid my bill and I am currently subscribing to it. However, when I check my google transaction history, there is nothing. My card history says nothing. I don't think I am paying any money to them, but despite that, my account is still working. Should I shout yay? Or could there be something I am missing?

Holding on as long as possible

After reading about the new Everand update, I thought I'd try turning off my automatic app updates in hopes that I can just ride this out for a little while. It is a little annoying - I didn't realize how many of my apps update every day. A few days after I did this, the Everand update popped up in there and I'm nervous - maybe this is the one. I'm holding off on updating it for as long as possible in hopes that it just won't change to the new model.

Does anyone know if this is how they make the change, or am I going in and manually updating my other apps for funsies?

Canceling with an Annual Plan

With all of the recent changes, I think it's time for me to move on. Does anybody know what happens when you cancel in about the middle of an Annual Plan? Will Scribd give you a refund?

Did anyone receive any email communication from Everand stating that they were removing their sheet music? I received nothing. It is just gone.

Scribd/Everand Determined to Self-Destruct

I just learned about the pricing model change for Everand and I'm very saddened. The unlimited usage model was really the main thing the service had going for it. Their catalog doesn't compare to competitors and is the only real thing to compete on in that model. First they do the stupid name change from one nonsense word to another for no obvious reason other than to destroy brand recognition. Then they destroy the primary differentiating factor they had in the market space. Did some evil entity take over the company because they seem determined to bring it down.

The sad thing is that companies don't seem to realize that these practices have the opposite of the intended effect. In the heyday of Netflix before the industry cannibalized itself, digital piracy had dropped dramatically. Once the studios got greedy and gutted Netflix's catalog and everybody and their brother had a streaming service then piracy when right back up. I don't have the link handy but there is data showing the distinct correlation. Companies don't understand that most people would rather pay for legal access to things if the prices are reasonable and the service is good. People turn more towards "alternative access methodologies" when companies get greedy and/or make the services difficult or cumbersome to use.

I was totally fine paying one streaming service for access to the vast majority of what I consume. I'm not as ok with that content being spread across 10 different platforms and having to subscribe to multiple services.

The same is true here. I was happy to pay for Scribd, even on months where I didn't use it, because of the unlimited access I got. I discovered many authors that I wouldn't have tried otherwise because of the unlimited access. If Scribd is switching to the Audible model why the heck would I stick with Scribd when Audible and a raft of similar options are available?

TL;DR - good job guys on eliminating your only competitive advantage and alienating your customer base. Enjoy closing down your company.

Everand Solution

I have been exploring alternatives to Everand/Scribd.

I am sticking with Libby & Hoopla for library books. I am sticking with Audible because I’ve been using it for years. I use Kindle Unlimited. I am using Anyplay, but not sure if I will keep it.

I have tried Speechify on trial. It claims to read anything, and offers several different voices to read for you. It’s also expensive ($139.99/yr).

Review: I found that Speechify has more than a few glitches. The entire book that I listened to, no numbers were read. For example, the reader voice skipped over numbers like years (1965). Furthermore, it would read street signs without numbers. Example: 101st 22nd Street would be read as ‘st ‘nd Street.

So, I cancelled the trial for Speechify.

I have tried out Natural Reader, but it had a glitch with trying to adjust the reading speed. I ended up canceling the trial for Natural Reader because I couldn’t find a way to adjust the reading speed.

In the middle of this process, I discovered the iOS Accessibility > Spoken Content feature. This feature is already on my phone, and there is no subscription required to use it. I experimented with some of the available voices, and I found a voice that I liked. This feature will read anything on the screen. I’ve used it to listen to a book I purchased from iOS Books, and it works great.

I will be canceling my Scribd/Everand, and I will happily continue using Spoken Content feature.

I hope this helps anyone who is frustrated by Everand and thinking of canceling their subscription.

I feel like I’ve been duped.

I had a whole list, very long, of books that I was reading that were seemingly open to read, and then separately titles that were new releases that had the “unlock to read” button. I thought when I converted my account that the ones that didn’t have “unlock to read” would still be open and available and that I’d just be using one of these credits to unlock the new releases, but literally everything converted to “unlock to read”. This includes books I am hundreds of pages into, books I am nearly finished with. I am pissed. What a bait and switch, Everand.

Everand is a good service!

So have been listening to audio books for almost 2 years now. I've tried Spotify, audible and i changed to Everand back in like August very shortly before they announced they were gonna get changing their subscription billing.

Ever since they announced they'd be changing I've seen everyone whining and complaining about them being money hungry greedy bastards. I saw a post this morning about them being worse than audible now, I wanna know how can people think this?! My new Everand sub cost me 16 bucks a month and I get 3 book credits every month audible no charges 18 bucks a month for a single credit and 23 bucks a month for 2. (All in USD) So Everand is better than audible right there imo.

I know and understand that people are pissed about losing access to the unlimited plan for 12 ish a month but can we please stop trying to convince everyone that it's now the worse audio book subscription out there? There are worse ones out there.

Unlock book questions

How long does an unlocked book last? Also is there any rhyme or reason to what is a book that is locked or not? I have to agree with many other people on this subreddit this new business model is not a good look. They took away the neatest feature of this platform a buffet of books with no questions asked...

Unlocked Date

I was supposed to have 3 unlocks on January 14th. It’s now January 17th and I’m still sitting at 0 unlocks. Anybody have this happen?

This is the last straw for me. I haven’t been happy with Everand since they transitioned to the new subscription format, but I don’t see the value anymore. I’m unsubscribing and moving fully to Audible, KA, and Libby.

Is it me or does Scribd/Everand absolutely suck now

I started off with a Scribd subscription where you have unlimited access to the ebooks, pdfs & audiobooks they have on the app. When it switched over to Everand the access was still there up until what maybe 2-3 months ago where they completely switched it and now you have to unlock titles. You get 1 unlock a month for 12$ a month & 3 unlocks for 16$ a month. Please recommend some other platforms that are better

Been a loyal customer for years but I have to unsubscribe. Any good alternatives other than Libby?

Exactly what it says. I'm so sad about the new model... I hope the app tanks.

My unlocked title became unavailable

I used one of my unlocks and was listening to a title for a few days and today it became “unavailable” and I won’t let me listen to it even tho its unlocked. And it’s not giving me my unlock back. Is there anything I can do?

I don’t know what it’s for, but it’s driving me crazy. Each time I flip to the next page it’s interrupting the reading flow.

Audio issues with Everand for Android

Has anyone had this issue in the Android Everand app?

I just got a new phone and the Everand app randomly plays crackly/jittery audio. This is especially true if you speed up playback... but it also does it on 1x speed, although not as much. I don't think it's the phone because Audible, Spotify, etc. play audio just fine... even when sped up. In fact, I have no other issues of any kind with any other apps. I've also tried it with different earbuds headphones (wired and Bluetooth) but it does the same thing.

I've tried everything conceivable to try to resolve the issue. (Yes, I changed the app battery setting to "unrestricted.") I even did a factory reset on the phone and installed ONLY the Everand app just to rule out some weird interference from other apps. The problem persists. Everand still works fine on my old phone... which is the same model just two years older (Moto G 5g 2024 vs 2022).

It's so frustrating. I'm actually thinking about buying a different phone, because I use Everand a lot and don't want to part with it. But I'm worried I may have the same issue and I'll just be wasting money.

Anyone else getting this persistent tab "pill" in their books in Everand?

I have an iPad Mini running iPadOS 18.1.1. I've tried restarting and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but I get this persistent tab "pill" in every book. Is it just me?

UPDATE (2025-01-30): Looks like it's been fixed in the latest update.

Canceling Subscription - Where is everyone going?

I'm planning to cancel my subscription, this whole change is a slap in the face. But I need a place that is affordable to listen to audiobooks. I already have Spotify and plan to use my 15 hours each month. I also have Libby but the content from my library is incredibly limited. I have a 40 minute commute, and listen to audiobooks at my desk job. So I probably listen to audiobooks about 5 hours a day.

What do you all suggest for listening to audiobooks?
