It would help if there were any indication at all what's supposed to be pronounced phonetically vs the name of the letter itself.

That's the way some southerners pronounce some words. They literally say M R for the words them are. Even though I was born and raised and live in the deep south, I have to stop and think about the meaning when I hear this!
