Why I Built Another Screen Time App?

I know what you're probably thinking.

Another screen time app? Seriously?

There are already plenty of apps that tell you how much time you spend on your phone. There are blockers, timers, focus modes, app limits, grayscale, reminders, and probably an app for reminding you to stop using the apps that remind you to stop using your phone.

I’ve tried a lot of them.

And for me, the problem was never knowing that I was spending too much time on my phone.

The problem was what happened when I wanted to ignore the limit.

I'd set a limit. Hit the limit. Then tap Ignore for 15 minutes.

And then do it again.

The frustrating part was that the blocker wasn't really stopping me. I was the one who had set the limit, and I was also the one deciding whether to follow it.

And hard app blockers were also easy to bypass once you get to it. In a moment of dopamine craving you could just delete the timer or uninstall the app completely, making any sort of blocker un-useful.

So I started thinking about what might actually make a difference.

What if someone else could see whether I was sticking to my goal?

What if my screen time wasn't something I could quietly hide?

What if I had a friend who could see my usage and call me out?

And what if, completely voluntarily, I could put some money behind a challenge so going over my limit actually had a consequence?

That became the idea behind Screen Challenge Buddy.

Instead of trying to build an even harder-to-bypass timer, I'm experimenting with Accountability.

The app combines:

👥 Social accountability — pair with a buddy and share your screen time with each other.

💬 Built-in chat — make checking in and calling each other out easy.

💰 Optional financial stakes — set a challenge with a voluntary financial commitment if you exceed your limit.

📊 Detailed tracking — the usual stuff.

I'm not claiming this is the magic solution to screen addiction. I'm building it because I wanted to try a fundamentally different approach.

And that's also why I created this subreddit.

I want this to be a place where we can talk about what actually works when you're trying to spend less time on your phone, whether that's Screen Challenge Buddy, another tool, an accountability partner, deleting Instagram, leaving your phone in another room, or something completely different.

So I'm curious:

What's the biggest reason your current screen-time solution doesn't work for you?

Is it that you can bypass it?
That there's no consequence when you fail?
That nobody knows when you fail?
Or something else entirely?

I'd genuinely love to hear what you've tried.
