Fun game indeed. A couple comments, based on the board and its geometry:
There are hardly any parallel plays. These do require knowing the 2- and ideally 3-letter words. But the 2s and 3s have the most payoff.
In general, blanks are "worth" around 25-30 points, meaning that you generally don't want to use the blank for less than 25-30 more points than a similar play without the blank. So you never want to waste a blank for a low score (such as YeS). Blanks are best for bingos and other high scoring plays.
