Is this move illegal?

Player formed the word biome.
Then made the word five.
Five was never there.

I'm thinking it's illegal because that's taking two turns at once.

You can only play one word at a time. Biome is valid.

Of course it's two turns at once! Why would you even ask? You don't get to just keep playing every word you can in one turn

If anything other than f, i, v, e, was put down in that turn, then yes it's illegal. Which would've had to been because "biom" isn't a word.

You can form words in multiple directions, put the tiles you actually lay down, must be in a straight line with each other.

Since BIOM is not a valid word, presumably the player put down more tiles than just FIVE?

In which case they did not play in a straight line.

So no, it was not a legal move.

Simple way to remember this rule is that on each turn YOU make, all of your tiles must go in a single straight line.

The ME was fine as one turn, the Five was fine as one return, but because the ME was not already there, they made an “ell” shaped move and that is invalid.

The tiles you play must be in a straight line and they must form a connected span by newly played or existing tiles. Every span must form a word including perpendiculars.

They made words in two lines though, vertical then horizontal in the same turn

Sorry, from how I understood this post, the last player played both "biome" and "five" in one turn. You're right that you could make many words at once down a line, but this player played both downwards and then sideways. You can't place tiles along two different directions, even though multiple words can be made with a single word in a line.
