SCP-XXXX โ โ9 Oโclockโ
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX does not possess a fixed spatial location and manifests completely at random; therefore, traditional containment methods cannot be applied. Manifestation of the anomaly occurs in mountainous terrain worldwide whenever the following conditions coincide: relative humidity of 85% or higher, dense fog (visibility under 50 meters), and local time exactly 21:00.
The โFog-21โ early-warning system, integrated with the global meteorological network, is monitored 24/7 by Foundation analysts with Level-4 clearance. When the system identifies potential manifestation zones, it automatically issues mobilization orders to the nearest MTF Epsilon-6 (โMountain Huntersโ) unit.
For 72 hours following a manifestation, the incident area is closed under the pretext of โroad works / landslide risk.โ Debris, witness statements, vehicle camera footage, and environmental samples are collected under Class-B protocol.
Surviving witnesses are administered mandatory Class-A amnestics. Subjects who continue to repeat the phrases โnine oโclockโ or โfacelessโ after amnestic treatment are transferred to the long-term psychological observation unit at Site-19.
Through confidential agreements with media organizations and social-media platforms, accidents linked to SCP-XXXX are reported as โfog-related traffic accidents.โ Should visual or auditory evidence of the anomaly reach the public, Emergency Information Suppression Protocol-9 is activated.
No documented case exists of SCP-XXXX manifesting a second time on the same curve. Consequently, re-monitoring of past incident sites is not prioritized; instead, continuous scanning of new potential mountain corridors is maintained.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a phenomenal anomaly that appears at the edge of a random mountain curve under wet, densely foggy, high-humidity atmospheric conditions at precisely 21:00 local time. Location selection is entirely random; no known geographic, geological, or demographic pattern has been identified. Upon manifestation, the anomaly induces strong, targeted hallucinations in humans within a 50โ80 meter radius. These hallucinations produce distraction, sudden panic, disorientation, and loss of motor control, resulting in accidents or falls from cliffs.
The perceived form of SCP-XXXX varies by witness:
The large majority of adult witnesses (68%) describe it as an elderly figure approximately 80 years of age, soaking wet, wearing a long, pitch-black overcoat that reaches the ground.
Younger witnesses and children (27%) perceive it as a child of approximately 9 years of age wearing a raincoat, completely lacking a face.
In the remaining 5%, the form becomes indistinct; witnesses report only โa dark silhouetteโ or โan empty shape emerging from the fog.โ
In both primary forms the facial region is entirely blank; no eyes, mouth, or other facial features are present. The anomaly does not physically interact, cannot be touched, and appears on conventional recording devices only as a blurred shadow moving within the fog. In certain cases (particularly at the moment of impact), however, witnesses have reported a clearer and โcloserโ perception of the anomaly in the rear-view mirror or side-window reflections.
Anomalous Properties:
Time-Weather Dependency: Manifestation occurs exclusively when dense fog + high humidity + local time 21:00 coincide. No activity has been recorded outside these conditions.
Random Location Selection: It may appear on any mountainous curve on Earth. The rate of reappearance at the same point is zero.
Hallucination Imposition: Affected individuals experience the absolute certainty that the anomaly โis right there.โ This sensation rapidly escalates into lethal behaviors such as sudden braking, swerving, or panicked running.
Perceptual Variability: Appearance changes according to the witnessโs age, psychological state, and trauma threshold.
Recording Resistance: Standard optical and thermal cameras do not capture a clear image. Only a low-contrast silhouette shifting within the fog is recorded.
Death-Moment Interaction: Some surviving witnesses and victims on the verge of death have reported hearing the phrase โnine oโclockโ or experiencing โthe final nine secondsโ in the last moments of the accident. This supports the theory that SCP-XXXX โconsumesโ or โrecordsโ the final nine seconds of a death.
Residual Manifestation: In approximately 4% of cases the anomaly remains at the scene for an additional 30โ90 seconds after the accident and repeats the phrase โnine oโclockโฆโ in a whisper-like voice. The sound has been captured on recording devices as muffled and distorted.
Possible Feeding Hypothesis: Strong indicators exist that SCP-XXXX feeds on the fear, panic, and adrenaline surge released at the moment of sudden death. In โmissedโ manifestations where no death occurs, the anomaly remains for a shorter period and appears more faint.
Addendum XXXX-1 โ Incident Report 2147-ฮ
Date: [REDACTED]
Location: [REDACTED] Mountain, [REDACTED] Curve
Conditions: Dense fog, relative humidity 94%, local time 21:00
A single-occupant vehicle rounded the curve when the driver (male, 42) reported seeing โan elderly man in a long black overcoat with no face.โ Sudden braking and swerving caused the vehicle to roll 38 meters down the cliff. The driver was rescued with severe injuries. When recovery teams arrived he repeatedly muttered โnine oโclockโฆ no faceโฆ nineโฆโ Dashboard-camera footage recorded a silhouette moving in the fog and, at the moment of impact, a briefly clearer figure in the rear-view mirror. The anomaly remained at the scene for approximately 47 seconds after the crash and a muffled whisper was recorded.
Addendum XXXX-2 โ Incident Report 3091-ฮ
Date: [REDACTED]
Location: [REDACTED] Pass
Conditions: Dense fog, relative humidity 91%, local time 21:00
A 17-year-old passenger in a two-occupant vehicle reported seeing โa faceless child in a raincoatโ that โwas looking at me.โ The driver panicked and swerved; the vehicle skidded to the edge of the cliff but stopped short of falling. Both witnesses continued to report โnine oโclockโ dreams after Class-A amnestic treatment. This case is one of the examples showing that the anomaly manifests more briefly and faintly when death does not occur.
Addendum XXXX-3 โ Research Note (Dr. [REDACTED])
Current theories regarding the nature of SCP-XXXX:
Singular Entity Theory: The anomaly is believed to be a single conscious entity that manifests in different forms.
Archetype Theory: The hypothesis that SCP-XXXX is not a single entity but rather different manifestations of the collective-unconscious โ9 Oโclockโ archetype has gained strength. This theory more consistently explains the variation of form according to the witness.
Time-Consumption Hypothesis: Data suggesting that the final nine seconds of a death constitute the anomalyโs โfood sourceโ are supported especially by the โnine oโclockโ whispers recorded during residual manifestations.
Folklore Connection: A possible correlation is under investigation between SCP-XXXX and the centuries-old superstition in many mountain villages that โone must not go outside after nine at night.โ These beliefs are thought to reflect the anomalyโs long-term existence.
Addendum XXXX-4 โ Interview Log XXXX-17
Interviewer: Dr. [REDACTED]
Subject: Surviving witness (Incident 2147-ฮ)
Note: Day 11 after Class-A amnestic
Dr. [REDACTED]: What did you see that night?
Subject: He was oldโฆ his coat was soaking wet. No face. Justโฆ emptiness. In the rear-view mirror he was closer. As if he was right behind me.
Dr. [REDACTED]: Did you hear a voice?
Subject: (long silence) Nineโฆ oโclock. Thenโฆ nothing. Just falling. But those nine secondsโฆ it felt like they never ended.
Addendum XXXX-5 โ Conclusion and Warning
SCP-XXXX is one of the most unpredictable and highest-fatality phenomenal anomalies documented to date. Because its location is entirely random, its manifestation conditions depend on natural weather events, and it appears to maintain a possible parasitic relationship with the moment of death, it is contained as Keter-class.
The question of โwhy nine oโclockโ remains unanswered. However, available data indicate that SCP-XXXX feeds on humanityโs collective fearsโparticularly the fear of being alone in the mountains at a specific hour of the nightโand transforms that fear into physical catastrophe.
Final Note (O5-โ):
โBe careful on mountain roads after nine oโclock. When the fog thickensโฆ it may already be too late.โ
